What is your CPU frequency?

I have the 17 R3 i7 6700HQ processor. It has frequency of 2.6ghz and turboboost upto 3.5ghz as Alienware advertised. Using Intel Extreme Tuning Utility and set the battery mode to HIGH PERFORMANCE. I ran the benchmark and found out this:

My old laptop 17 R2 has i7 4720hq. I remembered it turboboost upto 3.6ghz. And I remember it has a much higher score and was a lot faster. Of course it runs a little hotter and less efficient than the skylake i7 6700hq.

Other benchmarks proves that i7 4720HQ is a lot faster. It's quite ashamed intel focuses on efficency and not performance on the skylake cpu. The truth is, clock for clock the skylake does not have 20% advantage over the haswell as a lot of laptop companies advertised.

I am wondering what are your frequency and score? Does the i7 6820HK in the 17 R3 really capable of turboboost up to 4.1ghz?

as you can see in the right corner it say:

1 Active core: 35x, this mean, when the processor is using only 1 core it will run at 3.5Ghz

2 Active cores: 33x this mean, when the processor is using only 2 core it will run at 3.3Ghz

3 Active cores: 32x this mean, when the processor is using only 3 core it will run at 3.2Ghz

4 Active cores: 31x this mean, when the processor is using all cores it will run at 3.1Ghz

your score is really high :) have a nice day

They(Intel) reduce the speed because this new architecture have better performance, and you dont need to have insane speeds, your i76700hq is like 20% better in performance per core compared with Haswell. i have a i74710hq and my score is 624

ok heres mine..... i7 6820hk @ 4.00ghz (2.7ghz stock)

temps up here are quite worrying, its fully game stable here though.... excellent fps across the board, but the reported 4.1ghz is alot less stable, constant random lockups... could probably rectify with a volt boost but with these temps i think ill leave well alone for now..

now i have i7 6820hk. i only run at default frequency. my score is 1090.

i tried all 3 level of OC in bios. level 3, the system is unstable and always crashes.

level 1, system runs too hot and fan kicks in even at idle.

Your computer is never idle, there's always something going on that can and will cause your fans to kick in from time to time. Now, if your laptop is unable to run at any of the OC levels in the bios and the temps are high even at stock clocks, I would suggest you start the process of getting a replacement as it is possible that you got a bad processor or the fans control is bad, etc. I've had my 17 R3 for about a month now and have been running it using OC Level 3 since day one with no issues.

not sure what you mean by levels 1-2-3..??, the hk has an unlocked multiplier i have no need to enter the bios..... just open the XTU app and slide each core multiplier to 40x, leave all voltages on auto (default) ...hey presto 4ghz!!

my fans dont spin up at all while overclocked as speedstep is still enabled so its only running 800mhz while idle..... i think you have a hardware issue as im not even aware this AW15 even has fans..... its only when gaming you hear them throttle up..

My 17 R3 is silent unless I'm running Seti@Home or playing certain games. Unless you have your fan profiles set to one of the performance modes they should barely be audible.

Because I'm an "Awesome Human" and wanted to show you that an Alienware 17 R3 running OC Level 3 shouldn't be any louder than running at stock speeds I made this video just for you a few minutes ago.... [View:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Y7g3S0gAKc&feature=youtu.be:550:0]

using XTU: I only get 3.6ghz when slide all to 40x, not sure what is going on.

Nope. No other applications. I am asking for an exchange.

Do you have any other applications on your laptop trying to apply an overclock at boot? If so disable them. If one of them is trying to push the CPU beyond it's capabilities it could be causing your boot issue.

1. You will never reach 4.1GHz without enabling OC Level 3 as your CPU needs more voltage to get there. Look at your screenshot and look at mine for differences in settings.

2. That speed is a boost speed and can only be achieved on 1 core! All 4 cores will never run at 4.1GHz at the same time.

The Intel Extreme Tuning Utility will run at startup. But I agree that you should ask for an exchange. It ain't no fun if the overclock won't run! [:'(]
