Why is XMP Bios option off by default?

Hi,

As far as I can remember the X58 chipset support 1600 Mhz memory speeds by default.

However, the memory in my computer from the factory was set to only 1333 Mhz (XMP OFF). I turned XMP ON and my memory speed magically gets boosted to 1600 Mhz

Questions:

Isn't 1600 Mhz memory supposed to run at 1600 Mhz even without turning on XMP?

Does XMP add A LOT more stress on the memory modules (ie. voltage) therefore causing them to possibly burn out quicker?

CPU: i7 980-xt

Memory: 12GB DDR3 1600Mhz Kingston Hyper-X

Strange. When manually overclocking, we set it to enabled. Perhaps the PC shipped from us in a non-overclocked state? No, it must be enabled to get 1600MHz.

XMP Support = Disabled for 1067/1333MHz memory. Enabled for 1600MHz memory

How does Dell ship it for the 1866MHz memory? Do they do it with XMP on? What are the volt settings?

I purchased a non-factory-overclocked i980xt w/ 1600Mhz memory from Dell Business. That probably explains why

That helps what you said about XMP. Also, does XMP automatically boost up voltage a bunch?

Thanks for the response Mr. Chris M
