X51-R2, Windows 10 black screen while installing?

Hey, I was installing windows 10 and on one the restarts it just stayed on a black screen.  It's currently been around 40 mins and it's still on it and if u move the mouse a bit the cursor shows up.  I looked on another forum it seems mostly just to be dell products so I was wondering if there's a way to fix this?  I'm on an Alienware x51 r2 btw

Yeah it's really annoying, I'm glad I made a backup last night because I've had to resort to restoring a backup from the windows 7 disc. I'm really hoping dell have a fix for this as windows 10 looks pretty good

I get the same, noticed on other forums that Dell users are getting the exact same:

Black screen, no cursor, HDD light permanently on, this is after installing drivers

I left mine for hours

Power off & back on, it recovers installation but does the same again, no HDD light this time

Power off & back on, recovers back to 8.1 then re-downloads Win 10 (it deleted the folder in the root of c that had it)

Then it does it all again exactly the same. Seen a few people now saying the exact same thing, all have Dell laptops!

Has anyone found a fix to this black screen problem without having to restore their computer. I'm having the same issue installing windows 10 on my alienware x52 r2 desktop computer.

OK so the same thing has happened to my DELL Inspiron N5110, Lots of install time followed by a black screen with HDD light on in the background. (NO CURSER). After trying a lot of fixes yesterday i found part of the solution,

The installation has completed but because of some bug with the graphics card or video drivers on my machine it isn't displaying properly. I discovered that the laptop isn't recognizing the laptop screen as a monitor and is picking up an external screen as the primary monitor. So if you try a HDMI cable into an external monitor or TV screen like i did you will see the Windows 10 interface where everything else seems to be working fine.

Im stuck at this point, tried  downloading a few video drivers to solve this issue to no avail... still working on it...

Afternoon all,

I have an Inspiron 7737 and have made two attempts to upgrade to Windows 10 without success.

My experience has been pretty much as described by others. Install gets to about 70% then restarts to a blank screen and hangs. Turn it off and on and it says it is attempting to recover install, then it it goes back to the same blank screen. (solid HDD light is present when the screen is blank, but there is no mouse cursor). A second turn off and on and it recovers back to windows 8.1.

My second attempt to install it (after downloading the 2.7gb files again) was identical. Nothing was connected to the laptop during my attempts, only the power cable.

Dell say that they have tested upgrading this laptop, so what did they do to get it working? :

I'm a bit irritated (deep breaths). When the machine was upgraded from Windows 8 to 8.1 I lost the touch screen and have never been able to get it back. I was hoping the move to W10 would give me the touch screen back.

I really hope there is a solution soon.

What did you do to fix it?  I am in the exact same position that @SteveSanderson is in.  I have the same laptop he does, and am stuck with a blank screen after the latest Nvidia drivers install.

I'm not using multiple monitors and I don't fancy giving it another attempt just on the off chance.

I think I'll wait to see how others get on first.

Maybe someone from Dell could chip in?

Well keep us posted, would be interested to hear how you get on.

I'm doing a new clean install of Windows 10 right now, as my system got into a very bad state to where I had to just delete my main partition and start new.  A couple things I'm going to attempt though:

  • Update my BIOS....there is an updated BIOS from June 15 for the 7737, maybe there's a "fix" in there.
  • Try an external display to see if it is indeed an issue with Windows attempting to use a screen that doesn't exist, as the other forum link alluded to.

Let's see if either or both work.
