[X51] [Solved] UAC prompt at AW Command Center start up
Why on my X51 does the AW Command Center at start up cause Windows to prompt for administrator rights every time I log in?
The equivalent on my old M17x laptop doesn't need to and it's driving me crazy. There's no way I'm lowering the security of my UAC settings just for this application and nor should anyone do so

C:\ ProgramFiles \ Alienware \Command Center
Right Click Command Center / Properties / Security
Choose the user in question under Groups or User Names
Click Edit to adjust what permissions to allow.
You can do the same under the "For Special Permissions or Advanced Settings" by clicking the Advanced tab
Restart and good luck.

My user is already a local administrator and I have UAC at maximum protection i.e. Always notify me, the same on all my systems but this is the only start-up app that pops up the message.

Not sure what your point is, but UAC is pretty good. It's amazing that for years the likes of nix users have complained that Windows never had the equivalent to sudo and now that it has people that don't understand (mainly reviewers) it just moan about it. UAC should always be at max, it will only ever be a pain during setups/updates or when users have no clue how to code (I'm also looking at you World of Tanks devs). Once your PC is setup and in normal day to day use the only time you will hear from UAC is when something serious is needed to be performed on your system just as it is in Linux.

I think one setting lower than max is the Windows default. If you are part of the Admin group, it excludes changes you make yourself.

I have the same problem. I bought 2 X51s. Mine prompts for permission at startup, but my boyfriend's does not. We both have UAC set to the same settings (the default). Since they were just built by Dell a few days ago, there should be few differences between them, eh? His was ordered with the default Alien head desktop background, while I ordered mine with the blue schematic background.
I changed permissions to the Command Center executable as suggested above, but it made no difference.
I thought maybe the problem was caused when I had saved a theme, but using the default themes also gives the prompt at startup.
Lack of useful hits from Google may mean we have to live with it. I found lots of people with the problem, but none with a solution. :( At least I'm not alone in my irritation!
I've spent too much time fooling with this already. I have games to play!

There is another thread about this.
Remember that if an app or exe is set to "Run as Admin" ... it will always UAC prompt you because that is how the system elevates you.

Yes another thread created after this one - so they're welcome to participate here.
I haven't changed any shortcuts or executables for the Alienware software just reinstalled everything after a clean install of Windows (mine came from Belgium and I needed to change it to English), yet every time I log in the Command Center forces a UAC prompt for no apparent reason. The only .exe I can find that's set to "requireAdministrator" execution level is the AW tester executable, so maybe it's calling that each time it starts up. I suppose I can try renaming that to see what happens when I get home.
It's just so annoying after having an M17x for nearly 4 years and never getting the same with its Alienware software.

Nice workaround. Does the alien head tray icon still appear when doing this?

Got tired of clicking so I set awcstartuporchestrator.exe up via task scheduler with a trigger to run when I log in and set it to run with elevated privilege. Seems to work pretty cool so far and no more UAC prompt. The X51 has a single startup item where as my m11x and m15 have i believe 3.

The alienfx alien head appears in the notifier. you just need to disable the startup of the program in administration tools/system config/startup when you start it this way.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I disabled awcstartuporchestrator.exe in Startup and no more prompt. If I need to configure anything, I know where to look for it on the Start menu. Thanks much!

**WORKAROUND**
I had the same issue here. Called Alienware tech support and figured out the following workaround.
1) Click on your Windows button on the lower left corner then type MSCONFIG and hit ENTER
2) Go to the STARTUP tab and look for "RequiredApplicationsLauncher" and UNCHECK the box on the far left, hit APPLY then OK, then reboot and vuala...
Good luck...!

Sorry but if that's the advice given by Alienware for this issue, then I'll never be calling them for help again. What a joke. You do realise that stops the Command Center apps from working properly don't you? And yes I did try it to be sure I wasn't dreaming what they told you. I ran World of Tanks right after rebooting with the change and when WoT wanted to change the colours it hung for about 30seconds, up popped the UAC prompt which I allowed and the game hung which I needed to kill with task manager.
JUST FIX THE CODE PLEASE - IT'S A ONE LINE FIX!

Yep, that fixed worked...until my son had to undo it to make his programs work. Is there a permanent fix for this that will allow Command Center to work and stop the damned popup too? Step by step please for us non IT types who just want to use our computers.
