alienware m17x screen flickering while playing games
I saw in a previous thread that there would be a new BIOS update to solve this issue. But the post was in February and I just bought and recieved my laptop today (July 20th, 2010).
I still have this problem and was wondering if the solution ever came about.
Also I was hoping if someone can answer this question.
Why is it that my display driver will not update? it says that the current version is 8.6, when currently the up-to-date version on ATI's website is a 10.6?
I am using ATI Radeons Mobility 5870 HD crossfire X
Someone please help!

I don't have an AW laptop, but my experience with Dell and other makes of laptops is this ...
For OEM Desktop video cards, you can often go to ati.com or nvidia.com for drivers and they will install and work. I think this is because these OEM cards are built very close to "reference design".
For Laptop video cards, you are usually better off getting the driver from the computer maker (Dell, etc.) ... especially while the loaded OS is still current. Since these video cards are often integrated into the motherboard, the drivers are slightly special and matched directly to the laptop's unique hardware combo.
There has been exceptions to both rules over the years.

If you go to http://support.dell.com and enter your Service Tag, the currently released drivers for your machine will be available.
Be sure to try completely uninstalling the old driver first (even if it's the same version). Sometimes the pre-loaded drivers don't work quite right ... not because they are bad, but because they were on the PC when it booted it up the first time (while Windows was trying to initialize other stuff).
I've never had a CrossFireX system, but I've read it's not always the drivers ... sometimes it the game itself or just an incorrect setting.
