if you don't have a recovery disk you should have made one, se if you can borrow one from someone to allow you to do the get to the recovery stuff. You might retry the boot into F12 several times, as Win 8 is not very responsive to the F keys because of Fast Boot; you need to be quick. Otherwise, contact Dell for a Recovery Disk
Thanks for the quick response! I have a CD called "Operating System; Already installed on your computer; Windows 8.1 Recovery Media for Windows 8.1 Products 64-bit."
However, I'm not a computer technie, and I don't know what to do with it. Any advice would be appreciated.

I found the problem--a connected backup drive had something wrong with it, so I disconnected it and the alienware booted up regularly.
