aurora boot time
hey guys i know the boot time on the aurora has been a bit of a known issue. but even with my vertex 2 ssd just to get through bios is 37 seconds. with nothing connected but my mouse and keyboard. then its fast due to the ssd but really? is this normal? i have 2 alienwares and have minors problems with both...spent too much money to keep searching for solutions

1. Is there a CD/DVD in the drive?
2. Is the BIOS set to boot from the HDDs first?
3. Is there a firmware update for your SSD available?
4. Is "fast boot" enabled in BIOS (if it has such a thing).
5. Is it running a memory test at POST?
6. If you have a 2nd HDD, is it starting to fail - check it's smart table, or scan for bad sectors.
7. Re-set BIOS to defaults and try that.
8. Is "network boot" enabled in BIOS (if it has that feature).
....just a few suggestions.

I have an aurora same bios version, total boot time is prob about 30 secs at which time im at the login screen. Yours seems a little out of the ordinary. Since its the bios screen that is taking the time im guessing your PC is having a hard time detecting a piece of hardware in your computer.

Are the USB mouse and keyboard using USB ports on the rear of the PC? If your monitor has a USB uplink cable connected to the PC, disconnect the USB uplink cable from the PC and time a cold boot up.

I could time mine (for comparison) but I suggest timing sections.
Power button turn on:
Time to initialize BIOS
Time to load Windows to Logon Screen
Time to usable desktop with everything loaded.

Try what Tesla suggested and time how long it takes :
Power button turn on:
Time to initialize BIOS
Time to load Windows to Logon Screen
Time to usable desktop with everything loaded.
Post up your results

* Power button turn on
Time for Bios screen to even appear: 20 secs
Time for progress bar to go all the way across: 20 secs
- Total time to initialize BIOS: 40 secs
* Windows Boot loader screen - Select Partition
* Starting Windows screen appears
- Time to load Windows to Logon Screen: 15 secs
- Time to usable desktop with everything loaded: 35 secs
I would say that the total time to boot the machine is 90 secs.
All my USB and Firewire ports are used up (but some devices are turned off). I count 9 apps in the SysTray. Of those, I would say AW-CC and MS-Security Essentials take the most resources and time to load. Task Manager says I have 80 processes running (at idle).
Does that help?

*bump* (Old post I know...)
Anyone have any answers for this?
I have pretty much the same scenario with a standard Aurora as above except only keyb/mouse connected to rear USB and very slow BIOS boot (about 35-40 secs as Tesla has stated- seems very slow for such a beast of a machine, no?). Would have expected much lower BIOS load time.
I am awaiting delivery of a SSD to go in my beloved AW machine, but seems my super fast boot time that I expected will be slowed down by snails pace BIOS load times?!
Is there any way to speed up BIOS load time? Couldn't see any settings for fast POST, to disable POST or to disable memory testing or any such shortcuts I have had on past machines, the best I could do was disable other boot devices and have my HDD as fist device to boot (maybe shaved off a second or 2?)- surely there are other settings but none to be found in the BIOS I could see???
Suggestions anyone please?

Hmmm don't know, hoping someone can answer... but maybe this is contributing to my issue- I have dual 5770's in cf.
Perhaps takes longer to boot due to initialising dual cards or just that there is an extra graphics card to load.
I really hope there is something that can be done to speed up bios load times!!?

With one 6950 installed my boot time is 27 seconds from start to finsh (working screen). With two 6950's in cfx the boot time is 45 seconds.
Why would that be?

Thanks Tesla,
Yeah I guess it shouldn't be deemed as part of Windows load times, and the point of my machine was to have something good for gaming, but I also like to think it is great in every way- my little netbook boots faster, in particular the BIOS which is only a couple seconds vs my AW which is 35-40 seconds just for BIOS (plus windows load time). It just irks me, and I know its only a couple of minutes total to boot and maybe I should just accept it, but it would be good if there was a faster boot including BIOS (I consider booting to be time from hitting power on to usable desktop).
With the tweaks and settings I have used for OCing etc and the hardware inside, it chews so much juice that I can't leave it on 24/7 so boot time matters to me- maybe I should just learn more about sleep states/hibernation or something...
Still holding out hope someone has some answers though..??

Mine hasn't changed. I think I posted that when people were talking about slow BIOS posting ... but I don't usually count BIOS time as part of the Windows booting time ... so mine still boots Windows in 50 seconds (from Partition select screen).

That's about the same for my Area 51 and I have all my ports filled. These systems have never booted past the BIOS with any kind of speed so I don't even count that.
