there was typically no Xeon support for the R1 (I heard there was no micro code in the Bios), the upgrade paths were to 975x 980(x) 990x, but as was said, if the candidate Xeon chip's $40 it isn't a painful gamble. I would try to be on Bios A11 before trying one out. If you boot to a black screen but the fans spin etc, the micro code was absent

You can search forum, but I would guess no.

Like ‌ says, the i7-9xx processors that it shipped with are a safer bet. Maybe even the ones shipped with Area-51 R1 (also x58 and similar BIOS).

What really hurts x58 is lack of USB-3 and SATA3/600. USB-3 is easy to fix with Add-in PCIe card. I don't think bootable SATA3-600 or bootable NVMe via PCIe is as easy. At least SATA2-300 SSD is pretty fast.

USB3 Is easy as is bootable Apricorn Velocity Solo x2 Extreme SSD CARD.

Amazon.com: ORICO USB3.0 4 Port PCI Express to USB3.0 Host Controller Card with Power Cable Compatible with Windows 2000…

Amazon.com: Apricorn Velocity Solo x2 Extreme Performance SSD Upgrade Kit for Desktop PCs and MacPro (VEL-SOLO-X2): Comp…

The SOLO X2 card is NOT X1 so you need an X8 slot like the T3500 has.

When you add 2 ssd's to this it gets 800MB/s data transfer.

Nowhere near the 1200 - 2500 Mb/s that NVME gets but its 5x faster than regular Hard drive and its bootable.

I boot with one in my Precision T3500 which is NON UEFI.  The hint here is that there are XP drivers for this card.

Its been around for a LONNNG time.  The card also works in newer UEFI systems but SECURE BOOT must be OFF and LEGACY CSM must be ON.

Windows XP owners need to download drivers from

Windows Vista and 7 etc will automatically detect and install the drivers from Windows Update.

Another Bootable version is

A little pricey but also a nice find.

Have you ever seen one of these actually boot an x58-based Dell or Alienware? The reason I ask is because my forum searches (a while back) revealed most users having trouble with bootable addin cards. Working sure, but not as bootable Windows from BIOS-Post.

If it doesn't work the other X58 system is the Dell T3500.

Nice find. That's a lot of parts and Windows-7 license (still convertible to Win-10 license) for $160 usd.

However, there are other slightly newer workstation-class Dell's available for just a little more (that already have USB-3 and SATA-3). That are also UEFI (which x58-based motherboard will never have). Talking refurbs or off-lease.
