I have the same problem - my graphics amplifier doesn't work. I installed the card and installed the drivers and when I use the Graphics Amplifier app it says that that the external GPU is activated but when I try to run any game it simply fails to load.
to summarise the issue and all steps I have taken so far:
external GPU says it is connected in graphics amplifer applet
Windows shows 'microsoft basic display adapter' instead of nvidia 970gtx
device uninstalled and drivers have been removed and a clean install performed of latest nvidia drivers (347.09) with the graphics amplifer disconnected.
Drivers and device uninstalled again, and drivers installed with amplifier connected.
I have the exact same problem, only with a GTX 980. same wrong card listed in device manager. also I cannot get nvidia control panel to open since my PC thinks there's no nvidia card installed. I will keep testing different things and keep updating this post.
Have you installed the drivers for the GTX 970? I have not tried that yet.
Also when you run Alienware autopsy test. do you get an error regarding your integrated graphics card? I always do.
Same thing is happening with me i just purchased the Alienware 13 with the GTX 980 and the AGA do not recognized it. I wonder when is DELL going to fix this with Nvidia assistance, as far as i know AMD did a driver fix already. Thanks for sharing information.

Have you enabled the graphics amplifier with FN+F1?

Read through the sticky at the top of this board, "AGA (Alienware Graphics Amplifier) driver confusion".
