You may have done the .inf mod wrong. I suggest you get the Nvidia driver Alienware has for their latest laptops as you won't have to mod anything (I think).
As well, are you on Windows 8 / 8.1? If so, you'll need to disable driver signature enforcement (you would need to do this if you still want to install your modded driver).

Save the files with the changed IDs, and do NOT try to do a automatic update in device manager.

After trying to run setup i encountered a "graphics driver failed" error and at the same time the Standard VGA adapter disappeared from device manager. After that i tried different ways to solve the issue by scanning and reinstalling standard vga adapter and manually updating drivers etc but with no luck. My concern is that i still don't see the name of the card (NVIDIA GTX 660M) anywhere in device manager as if my computer still can't recognize it. Any ideas or suggestions?

The GTX 660m is not supported for the m17xR3, so you'll need a modded driver.

Before that, what is the GTX 660m detected as in device manager? Standard VGA adapter?
And can you provide a link as to where you bough the GTX 660m? Only Dell and Clevo GTX 660m's work in Alienware laptops.
