nvidia GTS 240 problems
i have been trying to figure out what is wrong with the video card because i keep getting a black screen. when i go to diagnose the card i keep getting a black screen. i have run the diagnosis on the rest of my system and everything checks out. when i run the diagnosis for the video card thats when i keep getting a black screen. is there an update or something else that i can use that can help? or am i going to have to replace my card?

What make and model of computer do you have?
Un-install old drivers.
Install another working video card (even if it's an old one). Load proper drivers. See if the problem goes away. If it does it was probably a bad video card causing the original problem.

i dont have another video card. alienware aurora. its 3yrs old

What type of test are you running when getting the black screen?
Did you try to update your video drivers?

i was using the alien autopsy and as far as i know all the drivers are up to date

i cleaned it all out like the instructions said. went back and made sure all the drivers were updated and still got the black screen with SWTOR. what else is there to do? or do i have to get a new card?

Try testing with Heaven Benchmark v3 (Direct-X).

Here is the link to download the Heaven Benchmark, press the F9 when the benchmark starts to rate the FPS and get the results.

installed it and ran the program. it crashed. said something about the nvidia kernel driver crashing and recovered. was anly about 1min into the benchmark test

I like AMD (78xx or 79xx nowdays). Other people like nVidia (670 or 680). Google it. Whole websites, sections, and articles about it.
If you have an Aurora R1 (x58) with optional 875w Power Supply ... you can run just about any single card solution under $500.

should i run it with the shell open to see if the fan is working or is there another way to tell?

Did you ever try re-seating the card and it's power connectors? Is it clean? It it's little on-board fan turning?

So, it's not the SWTOR game or the drivers.
Card seems to be having a problem running a full screen Direct-X app (which requires full processing power).
Still sounds like a bad video card.

thats what i figured and now its time to shell out for a new one. which i was hoping to avoid but i guess ill have to if i want to go back to gaming. what would be a good replacement?
