If the Task Manager isn't able to see any program, as you say, one of those softwares might be conflicting with it. Are you able to restore the computer to a previous point where you didn't have that software installed?
I recently re-installed Windows 8.1 Pro. without clobbering my data. I used Seagate Disc Wizard to back up hard drive, and the Task Manager showed the program, the percentage of memory, but never showed the processors working, or showed the hard drive being read. More likely the OS has a little routine not to update task manager if it thinks the manager is not being viewed on the screen and is not starting up when the task manager is brought up into view.
I am not too disturbed by it. I hope to be an early adopter of Windows 10, although I wonder if I am giving up the ability to re-install Windows from the hard drive partition, which is now taken up with Windows 8,1 Pro.
