on my device it is Fn+F1 and yes, i have tried that .
my laptop just doesn't seem to detect that anything at all is connected to it, it doesn't appear to be the monitor at fault either since i tested it with several other laptops and it worked perfectly.
There is the confusion. You have the Alienware 17-R1, not the older M17x series or the newer Alienware 17-R2. FN F1 should have worked. Check Tesla1856 advice. Also test a HDMI to VGA cable.

Be sure the laptop's plastic case allows the cable or adapter (and it's housing) to be fully inserted, with at least 0.5mm to spare.
