DirectX 12 (dxgmms2.sys / dxgmms1.sys) issues with Windows 10 64 Bit BSOD's, Spreading Awareness
I'm not sure if this sub supports it but there is very little help for this issue. /r/Windows10 has only a couple threads about it (which have no replies), and /r/Nvidia has like two threads with no real replies. More on that latter;
So upon getting a new PC recently for christmas, a shiny new Windows 10 machine with two GTX 970's, I immediately noticed a BSOD in certain games that would eventually lead to a file called dxgmms2.sys which is a DirectX file crashing in some manner that it would take the entire OS with it, causing the BSOD. Doesn't happen all the time, doesn't happen in every game, and when it does happen it can be within five minutes of booting up a game or hours later into a game. Things to note;
* It is not a hardware failure. This issue has been reported by thousands of people, with Nvidia cards ranging from the 500x series up to the 900x series.
* It really only happens on Windows 10. From all reports I've read this does not happen to Windows 8.1 or Windows 7 users, *only* Windows 10 users. (and we can't uninstall DX12 and install DX11 since its supposed to be backwards compatible)
* It is not an overheating issue, again thousands of people getting this error, our temps are well within normal ranges.
* Happens with hardware brand new out of the box that is confirmed working, as well as hardware that has been used for years.
* Thus far Windows Update's preview notes from the Insider builds (Redstone, as late as April 2016) have zero information regarding a driver fix for DirectX and I've yet to see any official comment from Microsoft.
Where does this leave us? Well for starters, the main source of information is a thread on Nvidia's forum ( forums.geforce.com/.../blue-screen-dxgmms2-sys ) which has almost 100,000 views. **Not a single Nvidia representative has responded to a six+ month old thread** and despite testing all kinds of fixes and solutions the users who do respond in that thread still continue to deal with this. Aside from downgrading from Windows 10 back to 8.1 or 7 there is not a single solid fix. Upgrading Nvidia drivers doesn't do it, using older Nvidia drivers doesn't do it (some claim it works others say the opposite). There are a few examples of people seeking help from Microsoft ( answers.microsoft.com/.../fb59863d-331d-4e13-afd0-8ae538b1a472 for example ) **only to be told to run DriverVerifier, in which case we know for a fact it's DirectX related**
So where do we go from here? As said I'm simply trying to raise awareness. A lot of us have perfectly good hardware for gaming we simply cannot use in certain games cause we know for a fact, it'll blue screen thanks to dxgmms2 / DirectX conflicting with *something*. For some of us, downgrading to a previous Windows OS is not an option. Personally I didn't want Windows 10 but I use it. It does what I require, for the most part. But this issue is a deal breaker. As I said on the Nvidia forums I'll be cross posting this to the right places to raise awareness. Also poked Nvidia Support and Microsoft Support on Twitter.
