Reboot Loop/No Boot - Alienware 17R3 - Graphics Amplifier with Asus GTX 1080 Turbo

I've got a new Graphics Card this week, a Asus GTX 1080 Turbo but I'm having issues on using it with the Graphics Amplifier.

My notebook is a Alienware 17R3.

The board fits perfectly, it has only one power connector and It's properly attached to the GPU.

When I connect the Graphics Amplifier and power the notebook, it keep turning on and off like a infinite reboot cycle.

Maybe this specific version of GTX 1080 (Asus GTX 1080 Turbo) is not compatible with the Graphics Amplifier?

My previous video card, a EVGA 980Ti ACX 2.0 works just fine, and if I do plug this GPU to another computer also works.

I don't think its related the the GA PSU, but who knows?

Is anyone else experiencing that? Anyone tried this GPU with GA already?

Hi Chris!

Well, I did exchanged the GTX 1080 Turbo from Asus to a GTX 1080 from MSI and now everything works perfectly!

So, I can confirm that the MSI GeForce 1080 Aero 8G works perfectly with the AGA!

Thanks for all your support.

First, the order is =
* Laptop is on
* AGA is on
* Connect AGA to the laptop
* Restart the laptop

Are you saying that the AGA (Alienware Graphics Amplifier) + EVGA 980Ti + Alienware 17-R3 all work? But only removing the EVGA 980Ti from the AGA and adding the Asus GTX 1080 Turbo causes the issue?

The AGA can run the Titan X (250w usage) and GTX 1080 Founders Edition (180w usage) on its 460w power supply. The Asus GTX 1080 Turbo uses up to 225w so it should work.

Did you install the latest Nvidia driver (not a specific Asus or EVGA driver) for both the EVGA 980Ti and the Asus GTX 1080 Turbo?

Hi Chris!

First of all, thanks for the reply! :D

And yes, when I run with my EVGA 980Ti + Alienware 17-R3 everything works.

When I swap for the Asus 1080 Turbo, I get stuck on the reboot loops.

If I wait for minutes it eventually boots, but this is not acceptable.

I've tried a lot of things, turn everything off and then turn it on with the new GPU.

Plug the Amplifier on Alienware powered, wait for the message saying that a reboot is needed activate the amplifier, reboot and stuck again on reboot loops.

But even those few times I've got it working, if I turn off the notebook and turn it on again, same problem happens.

Is this order mandatory for a first setup of the AGA, does it make any difference if I just power everything off, install the GPU and turn it on all at once?

Regarding drivers, I've downloaded and used official drivers from NVidia, already tried with 980M drivers and 1080 desktop drivers.

When I get to try new drivers I use the DDU tool to remove it from system first and then do a clean install of the drivers.

I don't think the problem is a driver issue, since I cant even get to boot into Windows, it doesn't POST at all!

I will return this model to the store and get a Founders Edition to try and let you know the results.

* I was going off of this document which states that the laptop is on before connecting the AGA.

* Not sure. The AGA video card drivers reside on the laptop operating system, which then speak to the AGA, I wonder if it is possible that they could stop the boot.
