SSD install on X51 (r1) issues

Hey all,

I'm having some issues with my ssd install (samsung evo850-256).

1. In UEFI mode - Bios does not recognize the ssd i- BUT boots fine from the ssd - the ssd is shown as WINDOWS BOOT DEVICE in the bios.

2. In LEGACY BOOT - Bios DOES detect the ssd (as Samsung EVO###)  - but WILL NOT boot from the ssd- says "reboot and select a proper boot device"

3. I have the ssd plugged into the BLACK SATA plug on the motherboard - says SATA 3 - but the Samsung magician software says that the SSD is only connected to a SATA2 port (or lower)..makes no sense...

Computer boots fine from ssd (in UEFI) - speeds are a bit slow in crystal mark (320) should be 530+

Any suggestions?

The X51 (r1) has only Sata II ports so the speeds you are seeing in crystal mark are absolutely fine - the Sata 3 you are reading is probably referring to the 3rd SATA port in the motherboard (has 3 sata ports in total, probably labeled Sata 1, Sata 2, and Sata 3).

1. This is normal. If it wasn't detected it would not boot.

2. I think this is normal if SSD has previously created uEFI/SecureBoot partitions on it. Secure boot wouldn't be much good if you could just switch to Legacy and boot into existing Windows.

3. I usually connect SSDs to lowest port, just in-case only the lowest one-or-two are SATA3/600 and the rest are SATA2/300. You will have to check x51-R1 specs to see if it has any SATA3/600, but above poster says no. x51-R1 was built to be small, not super-high-end ... using tech available at the time.

All that said ... SSD (even on sata2/300) is still 2-3 times faster than spinning drive so I do it all the time.

Awesome responses tq guys - very helpful! :)

1. Yup it seems the R1 only has Sata2 ports and the reference to Sata3 is just a third Sata2 port.

2. I still don't understand why the SSD displays as WINDOWS BOOT DEVICE on UEFI but shows as SAMSUNG HDD in legacy..can someone please explain this to me?

3. Can any of the newer x51's support a GTX 1080 card? I really love my x51(r1) but feel it may be time to change it and if i was going to change it I want to make sure I am getting something decent as far as GPU goes.

Cheers and thanks again :)

2. Its detected both ways. UEFI hides some stuff because its in control.

3. No. No cooling, no room, NO POWER. Buy a real desktop (that accepts a real power-supply ... not just a laptop power-system) if you want to run the high-end gfx cards.

$1500 Area51-R2 Desktop (with 900w power-supply) will run it.

Thanks Tesla.

Unfortunately it seems Dell wont sell the A51 w/o a graphics card so i would be stuck trying to sell the 980 or Titan X which comes with the A51 - might just build my own which is a bummer cause I do prefer buying premade.

Cheers

When I look at it, it says you can get it with $150 AMD card.

Also, word is they will start selling with 1080 pretty soon.

hmm if i get with AMD card will that be compatible with the gtx 1080? I thought AMD had different configuration to nvidia cards? Ie: a mother board that supports raedon cannot support nvidia - again i could be completely wrong lol
