Who can help me? I want to replace the hdd in my Alienware M11X by a SSD. What size (height etc) should the SSD have? Who has already done it?
Any SSD on the market will fit your M11x. They only come in one size and are used in Desktops and Laptops.
Most retailers provide some form of data transfer with their product along with instructions. Just check to make sure.
I would recommend however that you purchase a fully dedicated program called Acronis 2012. Intel uses a portion of the Acronis software for their data transfer packaged with their SSD. Having the full software package by Acronis will allow you to back up your drive in the future using some other external drive or your current HDD. Acronis also provides 30 days of tech support for free to help you with the transfer.
Acronis 2011 if still available is just as good as 2012 and may be cheaper, but stay away from 2010 or earlier as they do not fully support data transfer from a HHD to a SSD.
Some will also suggest that you do a clean install since you are installing a new drive. If your system works fine as it is now, there is no need to do a clean install. The transfer of your HHD to a SSD with Acronis will take less than an hour. Once you are familiar with theprocess it takes even less time.
I did the same thing for my M11X. You can get any SSD. They are 2.5". What I did was I cloned my existing harddrive into the new SSD by using a cloning kit. I then installed the new SSD into the M11X. Very straight forward. The M11X is easy to upgrade.

There are some other videos on YouTube that show you how to install the harddrive. Just simply search for installation of a harddrive into an alienware M11X. Again, it's very simple to take the old one out and put the new SSD in.
