Win7 - Driver Install Order

Hey guys,  I have been running into problems with my AW computer.  Recently I reinstalled windows due to slow performance.  This was a major mistake because my computer has not ran the same since.  Really my first mistake was not backing the fresh install from dell using the backup data store.  Ever since my fresh installation I cannot get a single game to play without getting a black screen, followed by a hard reboot from me.  The main games I play are WoW, Starcraft 2 and TF2 (Steam).  The thing that gets me is that my computer was installed with these programs when I got it and worked fine for a year or so.

 

Could anyone help / comment on the driver order installation?  This is my current order:

 

  1. Intel Chipset (BTW I have a i7 920)
  2. Silicon Image Driver (harddrive i guess)
  3. ATI VIdeo card (HD 5970, I tried from Dell site and ATI updated driver, also updated my VBIOS)
  4. Realtek Driver
  5. Broadcom Gigabit Ethernet
  6. Command Center

After this I then do:

  1. Install latest .NET files
  2. Windows update security files
  3. WIndows update files
  4. Antivirus

 

I have installed WIndows at least 4 times and every time I get the same result.  Few things I'm not sure about:

 

  • Why there are two Command Centers on the download page?  Appears to be different versions.
  • Intel Rapid Storage Technology (Application).  I installed this once and it didnt help.  Not sure what this does, as nothing ask for it when I dont install it.
  • Intel Rapid Storage Technology (Driver)
  • Intel Matrix Storage Manager .  same as above not sure what this does.
  • Intel Matrix Storage Manager (OS preinstall only)

 

 

Any help would be appreciated.  Im due for killing some Gnomes.

Here's Tesla's excellent post on Windows installation, though I think you might have already come across it : en.community.dell.com/.../19887857.aspx

Get the updated ATI driver from their website, don't use the Dell one. Do a clean re-install of the ATI driver package. This may or may not matter but revert back to factory-level settings in the BIOS overlock settings; if you've meddled with it at any point. Don't use Dell's recovery software either, it's unreliable. Also, you didn't install the Command Center from the Resource DVD by any chance, did you?

This may or may not help but try running CHKDSK.

Thanks for the response.

I did come across that link.  Very detailed and helpful.  I did get the updated ATI driver from their website, it is 8.850.0.0 released on 5/9/2011.  Also, downloaded the Command Center from the Dell website.

Not really sure what else to do for these games to work.  All drivers have been updated with multiple Windows 7 installations.  I even bought that Dell program System Mechanic to help (probably wasted money).

I was able to get WoW to run.  Basically I put "-opengl" in the target field and logged in, changged settings.  Logged back out and removed that line.  For some reason this worked.

Starcraft 2 does not even start it just freezes after doubleclicked.

Driver order is good.

Install the CC 2.6.11.0 toward the end.

Matrix Storage is the old name for Intel RST. Only install the newest version. You have no RAID, so it's not required or really even recommended. If it is ever installed, the driver stays forever (until drive is formatted and Windows is reinstalled).

Not sure what your problems with games are. Are all the fans working?

Can you run ... Dell Diagnostic, DirectX DXDiag, Windows Experience Index test, Heaven Benchmark ... all ok?

Sorry I forgot to talk about the fan.  I do not believe my fan come on at all during the benchmark.  I hear the fan on start up but usually not when I play.  I upgraded the VBIOS as well, although I did get a wierd message at the end.

A few minutes ago I ran the Symptom Tree Diagnostics, specifically:

  • Video Corruption
    • VESA SVGA Video - Video Memory Test
      • Error Code 5300:0119
      • MSG:  VIDEO - Failure while writing and reading video memory

 

The kicker is I repeated this step five additional times and did not receive the message again.  I got the green check mark.  I hope this doesn't mean a new video card

 

I did a quick search and saw a post from 2010 by Chris.

* Turn the monitor off
* Disconnect all monitor cords from the computer
* Disconnect the monitor power cord from the rear of the monitor
* Press and hold the monitor power button in for 5 seconds
* Reconnect the monitor power cord to the rear of the monitor
* Turn the monitor on
* The floating red/green/blue/white dialog box should appear on screen against a black background. If it doesn't appear, the monitor is defective

* If it does appear
* Power the PC off
* Open the case cover
* Disconnect the monitor from the video card
* Remove/reseat the video card in its slot
* Reconnect the monitor to the video card
* Replace the cover
* Power the monitor on, then the PC. If the lines still appear, contact support and they will send a replacement video card

Something with the video card for sure. Reseat it and try the Dell 5970 VideoBIOS again. If you get an error write it down.

The Heaven benchmark should have run fine in Direct-X11, max. resolution, and the default settings (which are pretty high). You should have heard the fan speed-up for sure.

Turn it off, remove the cover, and run it like that. See what the fans are doing (especially the one on the 5970).  A $20 fan can keep a $600 video card from working ... easy.

Make sure the 5970 is not Over-Clocked. Leave ATI Over-Drive or GPU-Observer open on second monitor (or run Heaven in large Windowed mode) ... try to see what the video card is doing when stressed (before it crashes).

I tried to update the VideoBIOS tonight and got the same result.

After hitting 1 it clears the dos screen and says:

  • C:

 

I used the AMD Radeon HD 5970 VBIOS from the Dell website.

Basically I burned the VBIOS on a disc as the directions said and restarted, followed by a F12, cd rom start up.

Since my CCC is presently "stuck", I can't copy my info, but I had the following from an earlier Document I had prepared.  Note this was written before I new anything about those cards or CCC and that after I had "enabled x-fire after which the "Disabled" changed to "Linked" Unit was shipped without x-fire enabled.

Extract from Dell’s instruction on the "urgent" 8/24/2010 AMD/ATI Bios Upgrade S3C00001.104/105 A02

Note: I used this info to verify that I indeed had the latest BIOS installed. - not sure if the 104/105 designation relates on a Dual Configuration to "Card" or "GPU" on card; i.e. 1st GPU on each card is 104 and 2nd is 105 or if both GPU on the first card have 104 and on the 2nd 105. Elsewhere there is also the Subsystem ID’s 2542 and 2042 each assigned to 2 GPU’s. 104 and 2542 are associated with 2 GPU’s and 105 and 2042 with the other 2 GPU’s.

Primary Adapter as well as the Disabled Adapter are associated with 104 and 2542.

But unless the assignments criteria is know I can’t define whether the Adapter presently shown as "Disabled" is on the same card as the Primary Adapter or not, nor which GPU is using the that different INF. file.

 

 

Once the computer has completely restarted, right-click the Windows 7 Desktop and click Catalyst Control Center.
In the Catalyst Control Center window, click Graphics and then click Information Center.
Click to select the Graphics Hardware tab.
Verify the BIOS Part Numbers match the tables below (Table 1 and 2).

According to what all 3 of you posted (about Dell 5970) that all looks fine (the vBIOS is updated) ... do you agree?

However, just because that looks ok, doesn't mean the 5970 is working properly. Have you tried any of the other things I suggested?

It sounds like it fails when pushed hard. Italso sounds like Direct-X mode is a problem. but that might just be a coincidence. The challenge is figuring out if it's hardware or software.

Are you still under warranty?

Do you have a spare video card (even if lesser) to install as a test?

I agree the vBIOS looks fine.  Also found a guide that says you can expect that error.  Link is:

I did try the Windows Eperience Index Test, Heaven Benchmark and DXDiag posted above.

Today I checked the fan and it was turning.  I then pulled out my old video card, Nvidia G-Force 6800 series and installed.  The card worked fine, although the graphics were a bit...well the card worked =).  I then decided to try my 5970 one more time.  After installing the card I download the driver again.  As I navigated through the webiste and arrived at the download page my eyes lit up!  A new driver was released yeserday.  Revision number 11.6.  I install this driver and everything works now!

Hopefully this is a permanent fix.  I'll keep you guys updated if anything changes, if your interested.

Glad you have it solved.

That is the same link I used to verify that I had the correct BIOS already installed on my cards on Nov 3/10 when AW shipped my replacement Area 51 ALX. The Driver you mentioned must be from the ATI site and Dell, even now doesn't  list the Dell branded veriosn 8.762 if 8/3/2010 factory installed by AW.  

As to the Benchmark,  AW installed that version in March/2011 on my system when I had FAN problems (now fixed via a replacement MIO board.  I run it once on Apr 28/11 when my x-fire was NOT enabled,  as I found out afterwards when I for the first time opened CCC (now stuck on a specific menu tap) but was only able to save the very lo9ng  log file, not the nice version you have posted.  Didn't find the 2 page User Manual of any help.  If I remember correctly, after havin run it I was not able to close the application and had to hard boot the machine, the reason I haven't run it again.  That log file is rather long so I hesitate posting it except for the followng extracted portions

NOTE: Actually have 12 GB of System memory and not sure why it states only 1024 rather than 4096 Video memory - perhaps related to xfire not being enabled.  My monitor normally runs at a 2560 x 1600 resolution.

Those benchmarks differ widely from yours - and not being familiar at all with gaming nor these card yet. I don't know whether that is good or not..  Not sure what I did wrong that I couldn't exit from that aplication. I simply run it and didn't chose any perhaps availalble seltting nor why I wasn't able to save a results file like yours.. And as stated, CCC was set at whatever AW had set it when they installed it.
Certainly would like any comment on that banchmark of mine.
