17 R4, no longer charging, AC LED turns off when plugged in

Question

I am having a problem with my 17R4 laptop. It was working fine for a long time (about 4-5 years) when it suddenly stopped working. And I mean stopped. No low power prompt, no stop message, nothing. I've noticed that the led at the tip of the AC cable was out so I checked to see if it was plugged in. After I determined that it was (lights still out) I unplugged it from the laptop and tried to turn it on again. Nothing. I unplugged the AC adapter and tried a good one that I know works. The AC adapter light goes out. I try both adapters on another laptop and they both work I check the exterior ports for bent pins and find none. I find nothing that indicates a short. Aside from replacing the laptop what are my options?

If the LED on the adapter goes out on connection to the system, there's a short circuit in the system. Try replacing the DC input jack first:

If that doesn't solve the problem, replace the mainboard.

Unfortunately I'm a little short in funds. If my warranty from Dell will fix it. I'd rather do it through them rather than by myself. I'll be opening a ticket shortly.

The laptop is currently in for service. I will post the cause as soon a I know.
