17 R4, reseat the memory message?

Hello! Today after restarting the laptop, I have a white screen from SupportAssist saying:

"The amount of system memory has changed. If you did not change your memory... To resolve this issue, try to reseat the memory.".

I have no idea what this means. I have not touched any RAM or memory and do not touch it or anything of the sorts as I'm a newbie at this kind of stuff. I have no clue what reseating the memory even means. Any help would be appreciated!

@Alienware Area-51 ALX 2006 @fireberd Yes, the memory message is gone. I havent got the message again after several reboots and shutdowns.

But a new problem seems to have arrived. Since the update Windows Installer reconfigures all programs on startup with the same message: "Windows Installer reconfigured the product. Product Name: xxxx"Windows Installer reconfigures programs on startup.jpgWindows Installer reconfigures programs on startup02.jpg

After some googling I have found that other have concurred this problem with both HP support Assist and Dell Support Assist. https://www.windows10forums.com/threads/windows-installer-reconfigures-programs-on-startup.5723/ and https://www.askwoody.com/forums/topic/what-is-successful-application-reconfiguration/

Can any that have updated to SA v.3.9 check if  Windows Installer reconfigures all programs on startup?

I didn't get any reconfiguring messages after I installed 3.9 and restarted the PC.

I looked at startup and its still configured as it was before the 3.9 install.   I still have (old) WinPatrol installed and it monitors startup changes and flashes an alert if its changed.

@fireberd Yes, its a bit strange. It dosent happen to my dell xps with the same SA v.3.9. But it happened just after the SA update on my AW17R3. So it may affect AW systems? So if any with Alienware R3/R4/R5 that just updated can check their Reliability Monitor panel (https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/no-no/000178177/how-to-use-windows-reliability-monitor-to-identify-software-issues)

I have tested and the reconfiguration after a startup/cold boot do not happen if SA is uninstalled. I uninstalled SA testet. I then re-installed SA and rebooted and as soon as the services "Dell Hardware Support" and Dell SupportAssist" starts the Reconfiguration in ratability monitor is listed. So definitely a SA problem.I can add that I dont have the " Dell SupportAssist Remediation" in my services so its not installed on my system and therefore not the option system Repair inside SA as seems to fix the issue for some users. As described here: https://www.dell.com/community/SupportAssist-for-PCs/quot-Successful-Application-Reconfiguration-quot-and/m-p/7870220/highlight/false#M91432

I dont have any problems with the pc or the system itself, so if I hadn't check the ratability monitor i would not know. So I think I just live it for now and see if a future Windows update solves it or SA update. There is a miss between the new SA and windows 10.

@fireberd I have done some more digging and found out that my AW17R3 do not have the "Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell" listed under compatible programs and therefore not necessary or supported on my system. So why supportassis install it automatically is a mystery. But I it seems I have manage to solve the problem. This is what I did.

  1. I uninstalled Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update from Programs and features and restarted.
  2. I then look into the Dell folder inside the Programfiles folder and found the folder for SupportAssistAgent. Inside this folder was the OSRecoveryPlugin forlder contaning the problematic DellUpdateSupportAssistPlugin.exe file.

  4. Still after the uninstalling the pluginSo that's what have triggered the auto update I belive. So I renamed the folder with the DellUpdateSupportAssistPlugin.exe and removed it to a external HD.

  6. After doing this the Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update has yet to be automatic installed on my system. And the "Successful Application Reconfiguration" has stopped. I have tested with several reboots.
  7. The original folder where the plugin was placed looks like this now after I removed it to my external HD
  8. ThomasAAT_2-1620538371786.jpeg

As of possible side effects to doing this. I dont have Dell SupportAssist Remediation or systemtemrepair installed on my system. Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update is not needed as I not use it and can safely uninstall it. This method have stopped it to auto install again. The alternative was to uninstall both the plugin and support assist to get rid of the flod of "Successful Application Reconfiguration". That have been the "fix" for several users with the same problem. But I want to keep SA so this allow that.

I dont have the system repair option enabled or listed in support assist.

Just a side note; I have also just removed the folder so I can just change the name of the folder back to how it was and place it in its original place. And Support Assist is working as normal without any issues after uninstalling the plugin and removed the folder. As expected since dont have Dell OS Recovery Tool or systemrepair installed.

For recovery I have just used MS own Recovery options in Windows 10

I have also prefomed the comands with came back with no errors:

sfc /scannow

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

I'm not actively using Support Assist functions other than the boot hardware detection.  I can manually check for driver updates, but as its a 2018 PC there aren't many new drivers.

I use Macrium Reflect to do periodic full disc images (backups) so if recovery is needed that is what I use.

I actually have a dual boot system with an M.2 SSD for the Dell OEM Win 10 install and a second full size SSD that is a clean Win 10 with only needed drivers that I use in my Recording Studio.  The Recording Studio install is what I mainly use.

@fireberd similar to what I use DSA for. I ones in a while press "Run All" to check my pc for HW issues and clean up system files. The Recovery plug in is something that I dont use and will never use on this PC.

I have never get offered the recovery plugin in DSA or in Dell update. Not even after it was uninstalled. That means that my system dont support it. Makes sense since it's not listed under drivers for my AW17R3. I am quite sure that by uninstalling and removing the folder (preventing it to reinstall automatically) will do no harm. DSA works flawlessly without it.

Some screenshot that shows the Dell software installed on my PC. As you can see I dont have Dell SupportAssist Remediation installed.

ThomasAAT_0-1620574356983.jpeg

And systemrestore is not active in DSA:

ThomasAAT_1-1620574356504.jpeg

I dont have the system recovery option in my BIOS so after what I understand my AW17R3 never came with that option or is designed to work with system recovery.

Glad to have got rid of the flooding of "Successful Application Reconfiguration" and still be able to keep DSA. Hope it stays that way.

For those who this concern it my help get rid of the "Successful Application Reconfiguration" caused by SupportAssist

@bekrause Great.

Yes, the memory message is gone. I haven't got the message again after several reboots and shutdowns.

For me the issue was related to Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update. So after uninstalling that the "Successful Application Reconfiguration" stopped.

D you see this in reliability monitor?
