The drive should be mounted with a Dell OEM heat plate -- if you're replacing the same size drive, you can reuse the original. If not, you will need to order the part from Dell Spare Parts or another Dell parts seller like parts-people.com.
I'm concerned about it possibly overheating like my CPU. It may just be that I need to replace the thermal paste, but I have a feeling that the cooling system of the laptop may not be able to handle such a powerful component and may damage it.

No. The drive with the attached heatsink is designed for desktop use -- it will not fit your notebook.
