@jphughan ,That's all well and good, and I considered just leaving it running, but all electronic components have a metric called MTBF.  Mean Time Before Failure.  If I leave my laptop on the 16 hours or so a day I'm not using it, then I'm going to start having component failure three times quicker than normal.  I'm in the OP's camp of wishing for a usb switch I can use to turn on the laptop without opening it.
