It will take a long time for the 3000 series GPU's to be released in laptop form so I wouldn't think that the R2 will ever have them as an option and the chance of upgrading later when the cards are released looks highly unlikely due to what they did to the people who bought the R1 who can't upgrade to the Super cards.
The new 3000 cards have big power draws so the laptops that they will be put in will have to be designed around the GPU to be able to deal with the thermals. It won't be easy to just slap one in an R2 that wasn't designed to deal with the power and heat. They may even have to nerf the new cards to get them to work in laptops.

Hey @mattyb3,
you think they might bring the MXM slot back for the 3000 series?
just like the 2080 inside of my Alienware 18?

I really hope there will be an Upgrade-Kit for the R2.
It makes sense, because the R1 received the Upgrade-Kit to RTX 2080/2070 too.

If we can trust some Hardware-Web-Sites, the RTX 30xx is on its way.

Just bought the Area-51m with 2090 Super and i9 a few weeks ago - now its already outdated.
Its time for an upgrade
An official statement would be great.

I think they might have to adjust a couple of things such as the 3080 drawing 300watts of power unlike my RTX 2080 in my 18 which only draws 195w at max.

I do hope that they do this for one of two reasons:
A. To REDUCE E-WASTE!
B. It would justify the idea for having a modular Laptop and the expensive price tag for the AWA51m R2.

I'd love to see an MXM RTX3080 though I doubt it will happen. We can dream though.
Of course, I'd also like to see DELL resolve the AWCC/Kernelbase errors but we all know how well that went.

I'd give my to see new MXM cards. I did see some links recently for a standard format GTX 1660 Super and RTX 2060 Super. Not sure if they are in production yet. The 2060 has a funky die location though.

I agree with this statement, 100%. If you don't you really need to see pictures of the E-Waste landfills...

The voltage package required for a 3080 is well within the ability of the Area 51m R2.
The heat might be the killer though, Even with the vapor chamber cooling the Area 51m R2 still struggles not to burn the house down around you.

Reduce the amount of power being consumed maybe? The RTX 2080 said it only consumed 195 at max so maybe the RTX 3080 will be around that same area?
