Area-51m R2, extra SSD slot heatsink and screw?
Hi,
My brand new Area-51m R2 arrived today (yay) that comes with a single with a 500GB SSD card. I have an existing Samsung SSD card that I purchased not long ago and wish to install it in the extra empty slot. However, I cannot find any part number for the heatsink that goes over the card or the screw.
Also, is the heatsink even necessary? The card slot is located in far right side of the trackpad.
Thanks.

Hi @hellrock thank you for sharing the image of DELL Alienware Area-51M M.2 2280 SSD Bracket CN-03N3W3 Shield Caddy. They are available on eBay if you want to install similar.

Thanks for the manual, Chirs - that will come in handy; however, what I asked for is part numbers. Is it possible to buy the SSD thermal shield for slot 2 individually? I do not wish to resort to aftermarket parts.

You have to get another one on amazon but you dont really even need a heatsink but some thermal pads for conductivity and then that's it.

Hi @hellrock don't understand your questions.
Guess that you are saying that your legacy Samsung SSD card that you want to use, never came with a heat sink, but you want to put a heat sink on anyway.
Then you ask is the heatsink even necessary, without saying anything about this legacy Samsung SSD card specification.
If this legacy SSD card is a SATA SSD, doubt that it needs a heatsink. If it is a NVMe SSD and did not come with a heat sink, guess that you have now emigrated to a very hot climate.

I'm not gonna lie either,
I've been using my Alienware 15 R2 NVME drive since 2015 and it still reads and writes high plus I had no heatsink on it.
Also what are you doing on your SSD? cause if your trying to put a heatsink on a SATA SSD then its like water cooling your SSD, its pointless.

@crimsomPerhaps I should've phrased the question better. If you buy an A51M R2 with an SSD configuration, it will come with a thermal shield that goes over the SSD. My laptop has a shield installed in M.2 slot 1 because that's where the SSD installed. M.2 slot 2 is empty because I didn't configure the laptop with an extra SSD.
I have a modern Samsung 970 Evo Plus SSD that I would like to install in M.2 slot 2, but since Dell does not provide thermal shields in empty slots, I have refrained from installing the SDD until I could figure out the part number of the shield so I could order it.
You can see picture of the thermal shield in the A51M R2 service manual on page 23.
All clear now?

Hi @hellrock thank you for your update. Evidently Samsung’s advanced nickel-coated controller and heat spreader on the 970 EVO Plus NVMe SSD already enables superior heat dissipation. The Dynamic Thermal Guard automatically monitors and maintains optimal operating temperatures to minimize performance drops. Do not understand why you want to "change" the heat spreader, etc configuration that Samsung has already provided.

@crimsomSo you're saying Dell's SSD —no idea what brand it is— is inferior to Samsung's and that's why Dell put a thermal shield over it.

Hi @hellrock thank you for your curious update. Please remove and post an image of Dell's SSD so we can all see what you are trying to infer. Thank you.

No, they just put that so the heat can dissipate quicker. It doesn’t really need that but it’s there just in case.

Hi @hellrock if the SATA SSD or NVMe SSD has a proprietary heat sink, do not install the Dell heat sink because it will mess up the product’s superior heat dissipation and invalidate warranty. If it comes without a heat sink, it does not require a heat sink. If it comes already fitted by Dell, check the SSD specification to see if it needs a heat sink.

Hi @hellrock please look at M.2 2280 SSD heat shield solution, etc. posted in m15, M.2 heat shield order.
Also m17, M2 Full Thermo Shield. This is the larger M.2 2280 SSD thermo shield for Alienware.

If you really need a heatsink for the SSD just because you want to cool it better then its ok, Just watch the temps of the drive so it stays between 0 - 70c for best preformance.
