your post was of interest to me even though I have a xps7590.
This evening the dell update app alerted me to a new bios update. I never use the dell update to update my bios but do so manually via an usb stick. On doing so the install program informs me that the file is unrecognised or words to that effect for all the parameters it checks before it installs and refuses to continue.
I suspect in my case at least that this new bios hasn't been fully checked before its release hence the failure you're seeing.

Do not use SupportAssist to install firmware. Manually download the driver and install it separately:
https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/product-support/product/alienware-area51m-r2-laptop/drivers
