Area-51m, discussion, fans causing case vibrations

Hello there,

Please read and answer if you got same laptop!

Five days ago I got my  Alienware Area-51m (i9-9900K, RTX 2080) Laptop.

After first use I noticed some strange vibrations under my hands when I was typing or resting hands on area around touchpad.

It looks like fans are not good balanced or as power spikes what causing them to work unbalanced and causing strange vibrations.

Laptop is vibrating when is normal working state, when fans are spinning at some low speed. And when is in full load there is no vibrations.

I never experienced anything like this in my whole life and I am pro user of high end laptops!

I don't have same use on my Alienware 17 R5 with 1080 Nvidia graphic card.

This is annoying and frustrating at work.

Service told me it is in fact normal for a machine like this to have vibrations due to the strong fans that it has in order to dissipate the heat generated by the high end components.

But there are no vibrations when fans are at full RPM, only in low RPM and when there is not a lot of heat or anything to do with real cooling of system.

When you are typing or browsing web you can feel vibrations under your hands.

Actual vibrations are transferred to whole case.

Can any other owner of this laptop confirm the same problem?

I would like to know if this problem is same for all Area-51m i9-9900K RTX 2080 Laptops or only mine?

If there are Area-51m i9-9900K RTX 2080 that work without vibrations, I cannot accept to have one that vibrates when fans are at slow speed.

Best Regards,

P.S. Sorry for my bad English

Does anyone have similar problems with the same laptop?

Is it possible that it was just me?

Best Regards.

Same for me -- at medium fan speeds, the whole thing vibrates.  Low/high fan speeds are fine.  Cleaning the fans out makes no difference.

The same with mine. Any luck fixing the issue?

Same here, I thought it was odd and had my laptop replaced, the replacement one also has it. If you have a look under AlienFX, you can see the vibration increases when the fans are at 40% speed.

One possible way I found is to create a new thermal profile and offset the fans by 10-20% (Depending on the sweet spot for your system) for temps under 60degrees. This way the fans are either under 30% speed or over 50% speed.

How it worked for me is by setting the middle point at 40degrees Celsius to offset 20% for both the CPU and the GPU fan, You can see in the image below for my custom thermal profile. and that at 41degrees the fan is at 50% speed instead of the 39%-40% it originally was.
