M17x R3, GTX 580 thermal pad placement

I've done a few searches with no luck so forgive me if there is in fact a thread on this. I am setting up my retired laptop for my daughter and had to replace the video card. Does anybody have a layout with placement and thickness of the thermal pads/paste? Web searches are only showing me the 780 which different enough to give me doubts. Thanks in advance.

You can use the 780M layout as it will be basically the same. Usually 1mm pads will be what you want to use.

It looks like someone put paste on some of those parts which you don't want to do. The paste goes on the GPU die and the pads go everywhere else. If the heatsink touches these parts then you can short your GPU. The pads act as a thermal conductor as well as a buffer between the components.

You also want to put thin strips of pad along the thin strip of heatsink which runs along the top and down to the left in your bottom picture.

Make sure you also put a 1mm pad in the raised square section between the two deeper sections
