Yes, Dell will not help you at all for Legacy machines with no warranty.
It's definitely worth picking up an R4, for the right price. They are still very upgradeable and can even support a GTX 1070. It's always a gamble buying old machines off ebay though but I do it all the time. It all depends on what you can pick it up for.
