M17x R4, need help upgrading from Windows7 SP1 to Windows10
Dear users,
I've run into a problem of not being able to upgrade my W7 to W10.
I was using a Media Creation Tool from Microsoft using an "Upgrade" option.
After "Working on updates ...%. Don't turn off you PC" of W10 it restarts and goes to Unable to update and reverts back to W7 with a latter message on the desktop:
"We couldn't install W10
0x8007001F - 0x20006
The installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during REPLICATE_OC operation
Please visit: https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=528892 "
My next step was to delete $WINDOWS.~BT and $WINDOWS.~WS folders and running Windosw Update Troubleshooter.
Using same method "Metia Creation Tool -> Upgrade" I was also reverted back with a different error message:
"We couldn't install W10
0xC1900101 - 0x2000C
The installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during APPLY_IMAGE operation"
During both tries I had my antivirus uninstalled.
PC specs:
W7 Home Premium SP1 64 bit
i7-3630QM
RAM 6GB
Nvidia GTX 660M 353.06
120Hz 3D
I am a total newbie in this kind of stuff, so it would be great If somebody could explain the steps I have to do.
Had some research and it seems like M17r4 does not support W10, but people still manage to update.
Do not remember my BIOS version, If needed I'll link it later.
Here's a list of Win7 updates that I have not installed due to an errors:
-important:
KB4493132, KB4516065, KB4535102
-optional:
KB4516048; intel system 4/12/2017 - 14.28.47.630; nVidia - Graphics Adapter WDDM1.1, Graphics Adapter WDDM1.2, Graphics Adapter WDDM1.3, Graphics Adapter WDDM2.0 - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660M
Looking forward to hearing from you. I really appreciate your help!

Have you used the media installation tool in safe mode?
try that and use a usb stick with it so you can install it.
The other thing is,
do you care about your data? If you don’t then you can just use the media creation tool and install it on a usb and reset your computer entirely.

@Alienware Area-51 ALX 2006
So, If I run Windows in save mode and use WinMediaInst tool to Upgrade to W10 I won't lose my data?
If so, what will be the difference in results between Upgrading in Regular vs Safe mode.
What (drivers?) should I expect to be disabled etc?
Before the upgrade, do I have to update the BIOS to the version listed on Dell Support page and marked as "urgent" (release date 10 dec 2018, Last Updated Date: 20 Jun 2020, Version: A15, A15, File Name: M17xR4_A15.exe)
I also see there are "Dell Digital Delivery Application (19 oct 2018)" and "Dell Update Application (8 may 2017)", not sure If I have them installed. Should I install them first and try WinMediaInst again?
Thank you!

Hello,
I'm having more or less the same issue. I just can't install Windows 10 on my old Alienware 17x R4( from 2012).
Did you finally get to install it?
If so, How? I'm also a informatic newbie and don't know how to do it...
Thanks!

I'm going on a limb and saying your Wi-Fi card will probably be disabled after the upgrade. download the drivers for it from dell and then keep it on another flash drive after the upgrade so you can install it. then you can run support assist and check what drivers you're missing as well. a BIOS update really isn't needed unless issues are happening. Also it doesn't matter if its in safe mode or normal mode, either works just fine.
