Ssd to clone or not to clone

I have an 2021 alienware m17 with stock Toshiba XG6 KXG60ZNV1T02 1TB NVMe M.2 22x80mm <1DWPD Solid State Drive..... I was wondering on replacing it with an SAMSUNG 980 PRO 1TB PCIe NVMe Gen4 Internal Gaming SSD M.2 (MZ-V8P1T0B)... Should I clone my stock ssd or just use the Samsung as my second hard drive for gaming.?Model: AWM17R4-7696WHT-PUS

Hi @OniShuShu  welcome to this user to user discussion forum. This is not Dell Support.

This thread 04-20-2021 04:26 AM is almost identical to your other thread 04-20-2021 03:06 AM (which has now been removed).

This Alienware m17 R4 (2021) Intel i7-10870H CPU, Nvidia RTX3070 GPU has the WLAN module and RAM soldered onto the motherboard. The 10th Generation CPU has PCIe Gen3.0 x4 bus (data highway). The m17 R4 (2021) battery life is about 2.5 hours and Dell provides an energy efficient 1TB 2280 M.2 PCIe Gen3.0 x4L NVMe.

The Samsung 980 PRO PCIe Gen4.0 x4 NVMe delivers 2x the data transfer rate of PCIe Gen3.0 x4, while maintaining compatibility with PCIe Gen3.0 x4. The m17 R4 (2021) has PCIe Gen3.0 x4 and Samsung 980 PRO will work at this slower read/write speed. The Samsung 980 PRO is not energy efficient.

As part of your disaster Recovery Plan, a clone of the OS(C:) drive is recommended, just in case the original OS(C:) drive becomes irrecoverable. The clone OS(C:) drive can then be swapped in to get your m17 R4 up and running in minutes.

Hi @OniShuShu thank you for sharing update.

Dell provided the energy efficient Toshiba XG6 KXG60ZNV1T02 1TB NVMe. Your choice of NVMe depends on how the m17 R4 (2021) is going to be used. If on ac adapter and battery power for gaming, an energy efficient NVMe could be replaced by an ultra fast NVMe, so check the read/write speeds to get the best for your m17 R4 (2021).

Thank you for this information. So now I was wondering if I should clone with this drive or keep it as a second drive for gaming (
