My computer was out of warranty when the issue started, so I have not contacted them because they would charge me to send someone out to replace a keyboard that isn't faulty.... Honestly I think personally that the Dell drivers are causing the issue with the keyboard not functioning because it recently started happening to everyone around the same time frame (roughly), but I have no proof that is the issue. Luckily after installing the last update (Windows update) I found my keyboard to work after restart. But others are running into the same issue with the keyboard not working so I really don't know. Apparently dell thinks it's a hardware problem which it isn't ( I'm almost 100 percent sure it's software related) or Dell is just going to keep telling us it's a magical reason the keyboard doesn't work.... I wish I knew more but I'm in the same boat as everyone else......
Thank you for this solution but sadly when I followed the instructions, that is unchecked so there has to be another reason. So it's no go for me. I did try to update the recent program and then this happened
So right now, I am at this point I'm like this is an issue they need to resolve.
you are correct. It's not allowing SPECIFIC downloads to happen on my laptop, windows updates, Nvidia updates, etc. It's like their software fights with the computer + windows software. They need to really do something about it.
This thread is a godsend. I am a little over one month outside of warranty and contacted Dell for a goodwill diagnostic or repair. No such luck. They told me it was a hardware issue so I would have to send it in or have a tech come out. I bought a keyboard and replaced it myself, performed a windows repair, and the keyboard worked.....until the next boot. Same issue, and the only keys that would work are a few FN keys.
Uninstalling the unrecognized USB and scanning for changes did the trick after cycling sleep.
Thank you all for helping where Dell wouldn't! Unreal the amount of hours and frustration I have gone through for this.
Hey when companies don't stand by their products or don't know how to fix them this is the first place I go for keyboard issues. Mine has been functioning fine since a Windows update so I hope the issue is resolved but we will wait and see
i think we bought alienware's cuz of the gaming performance. and mac's well. mac. yea they wont have same problems and the company has much better customer assistance and stuff. but yea, this is supremely irritating. I have a few backup linux machines that will never have annoying problems like this so i get that staying away from dell is a good way to have less of a headache with their terrible and scam like environment but i think your talkin 2 the wrong crowd about mac's. most of got this machine for gaming aswell as daily use.
but hey i never know, maybe someone really just prefers to carry around a dedicated gpu and have terrible battery life for fun.
No I agree with him that apple sells products that just work and their products are supported. But in the same regard they don't make laptops geared towards gamers. Maybe one day but If a MacBook costs 1500 a gaming laptop would be near 3k...
I've been following this thread for months and I can finally say that the issue has been solved for me since the latest Windows update on February 16th (KB5022845). I can't tell for sure what did it exactly, but now I don't need the Driver workaround anymore. I will update if anything changes but hopefully this is finally solved.
The most recent updates actually brought my issue back which is unfortunate. It's software related so either we have up to date software or a machine that needs a extreme workaround to get the keyboard working again. It only happens after a restart or shutdown which isn't that big of an issue to me it's just more annoying at this point....
I have had the replacement laptop for a few months now. I have not had a keyboard problem until today. I have, however, also been terrified of updating the thing and put updates off as long as possible.
Today, my laptop froze. I don't know what caused it, but it would not shut down. I finally unplugged it, and held down the power button several times until it seemed to shut down. When it booted back up, I was greeted with my old 'friend': the keyboard didn't work. The lights to the keyboard also did not turn on this time.
I logged in using the on screen keyboard and verified that the keyboard did not function inside of Windows. I then shut the laptop completely down. When I turned it back on, the keyboard did function and I am currently using it now.
I hope that the problem was just a fluke of the laptop freezing, however in case the original problem arises in this replacement laptop, I am documenting this event here.
I am extremely disappointed in Alienware Laptops and I have decided that I will stick to the desktops from hereon out. I will not be buying another Alienware laptop. I also think when this replacement was sent, my warranty didn't get extended to reflect the new laptop's origination date, so I think that now it's out of warranty. So what happens if the manufacturing defect comes back up, again?
Unfortunately, my issue came back. The keyboard stopped working again. This time I didn't have any system update. It just stopped working. I swear this is the worst customer experience I've ever had.
Same issue as everyone else on this thread. For me the workaround is not working, meaning the keyboard is totally non functional inside Windows (even though it works in the Bios as noted by others). Laptop is out of warranty and Dell offered absolutely zero support. This situation is the worst I've experienced for any product I've ever bought... so disappointing for a big company like Dell to let everyone down like this, especially for a premium product like a Alienware laptop

I had everything changed when the tech came in August and this still didn't fix it.

This solution did not work back when I tried it on the originally reported problem laptop.
