m15 R5, RTX 3070, very low FPS in all games

My laptop is the Ryzen edition RTX 3070 with the 240Gz display and G_Sync. When I start up a game like COD Warzone or Cold War, the framerate for a minute or 2 is at around 80-100 FPS. But after that it dips severely to 30-40 FPS. It also does not matter if I hit the F1 key to ramp up the fans. The temperatures for the GPU without fans at full speed are at aroung 86 celsius and around 79 celsius with fans at full speed and the FPS throttling happens either with or without the fans being at full speed. I have used the Dell SupportAssist utilllity to check my RTX 3070 mobile. It passes without any problems. Dell technical support refuses to fix my laptop because the laptop passes the SupportAssist GPU test. Does anyone else have these types of issues and knows a fix? Please, I'm desperate because i can no longer use this $2500 laptop for gaming.

Dell did it via remote access, but still happens. What seems to be a "fix" is setting long boost TDP to 25w.

It's very annoying... I bought mine december 2021.

Didn't find solution for ages for this... than I came across a guide and it fixed it:
I created a new Power Option in windows, "Ultimate Performace" and I set the "Maximum processor frequency to 3300mhz, so it doesn't boost. After this I always reboot before playing and always turn on the fn+f1 vent boost for playing. this way the laptop stays stable and FPS doesn't drop.

So it was like this since new?

Did it ever perform properly?

Hello,

Could you update if you found a way out?

I have the same problem with my m15 r5 rtx 3070.

It dips to 20 fps after a few mins, and also very low fps - max I"ve seen is 80 fps on farcry 5. for a 2600$ laptop. Trying to get in touch with the dell support tech team is harder than finding water on Mars.

Thanks,

Sadly i have to come back, the solution only work temporarily. When i'm playing game, it works well at first but after some time its getting slow again, only 30ish FPS, GPU core clock only 300ish, GPU load almost 99% all the time and the power drawn only 35 watts.

Anything else i can do with it? already reinstall windows, DDU the nvidia and update the vbios but still the same.

Thank you.

I had similiar issues and after painstakinling searching and implementing different solutions, rollbacks, the main thing that worked for me in the end was doing a complete uninstal of the nvidia driver and then make sure you do custom installation when implementing the newest nvidia driver (clean installation). I resarted my computer, an wham, out of no where, my FPS started being stable and higher in games like Halo infinite set to high/ultra custom and then set min and max at 60 fps and it runs smooth as butter at both 1080 and 1440 and Metro Exudus Ehanced Edition running at 100+ FPS on ultra settings on both 1080 and 1440

It defaulted back to Autoselectic in the nvidia control panel but so far games are being transferred to the high performace 3070 during games.

are you able to play these games any time longer than 3 hours? anything longer than that and my battery goes to 5%.

@high_life111 @gmsilva83 @xenomachina @iKONs

Happy new years!
Its been a while since ive been on Dell but heres what I recommend:

I would try to update the GPU driver to the latest version and a clean install of it to see if that fixes the issue but I would also set the settings in NIVIDA control panel to these:

  • Image Sharpening : Turn it OFF.
  • Ambient Occlusion : Performance or OFF if the game isn't DX12
  • Anisotropic filtering : Application-controlled
  • Antialiasing – FXAA : ON
  • – Gamma correction : ON
  • – Mode : Application-controlled
  • – Transparency : OFF
  • Background Application Max Frame Rate : 20FPS
  • CUDA – GPUs : ALL
  • DSR – Factors : OFF
  • Low latency mode : ON or ULTRA
  • Max frame Rate : ON, Set the average of FPS according to your monitor refresh-rate
  • Multi-Frame Sampled AA (MFAA) : ON
  • OpenGL rendering GPU : Select your GPU
  • Power management mode : ADAPTIVE
  • Shader cache : ON
  • Texture filtering – Anisotropic sample options : ON
  • – Negative LOD bias : CLAMP
  • – Quality : HIGH PREFORMANCE
  • – Trilinear optimization : ON
  • Threaded optimization : ON
  • Triple buffering : ON
  • Vertical sync : ON
  • Virtual Reality pre-rendered frames : 1

Hi,

Thank you for the settings, i have tried it and it can lower the temperature around 76-83 celcius degree with lower fps, however the GPU clock still suddenly lower to 300Mhz and the fps drop to 12-20, the temperature also get lower to 71 celcius degree.

I accidentally press the fn+f1 button and the game back to normal but it only temporary also, every 1-3 minutes the GPU clock slowed down and i have to press the fn+f1 again.

Is it because of throttling? i can understand if the temperature constantly 86 celcius degree, but with your setting the temperature maximum only 83 celcius degree. i dont understand this problem, is my laptop faulty?

So no. no it isnt.

I would highly recommend downloading this:

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 Ti/3060/3070 Firmware Update Utility | Driver Details | Dell UK

Then go to the GeForce Experience app, check for updates on the Game Ready Driver and select the custom installation option and check the box that says "Clean install Graphics Card" and that should fix the issue after its done installing.

NOTE: it will remove the settings you put on the laptop which were the settings I recommended but I would just re enter them again after the clean install of the GeForce Game Ready Drivers after you installed the vBios for the GPU Dell provided.

It won't affect most games, but you're crippling the cpu by doing that. It makes a lot of difference in warzone and halo. It's not and ideal solution for an expensive laptop like that.

I have the exact same problem. Dell made format my pc so they could rule out software, but still delivers the same 40 watts instead of 120 watts from time to time. In the end they just gave their solution, pay for advanced support since their hardware tests passed. Pretty disappointed since i'm getting 3050's performance from time to time while paying for a 3070.
