m17 R2, overheating

Alienware - m17 R2 17.3" Gaming Laptop - Intel Core i7 - 16GB Memory - NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 Max-Q 512GB Solid State Drive - Lunar Light

Bought from Best Buy in December for the first time became overheated.

I was playing WoW and everything slowed down graphically. It felt like lag at first but it was more than that it was the processor or GPU being slow it turns out.

It only happened once so I am monitoring it more closely. I only play WoW on it though. With nothing else running in the background except maybe amazon music sometimes. I play at 6 or 7 settings out of 10. So obviously not max, just on the recommended settings that WoW suggests.

Is there anyway to replace the heatsink on it? Or anything else I can do to ensure the safety and longevity of my product? I would like to do all I can to ensure the life of this laptop as I like it a lot. If I could buy a better heatsink or do anything to help it I would. I just don't know where to ask.

Thank you

There is no solution to this as I spent 6 months with tech support trying to fix it and then I tried to return it and they would not due to it being outside of the warranty period.

Hey. I have the m15 with a nearly identical setup. Long story short my cpu was hitting 97 degrees.

I managed to get it under 88 with "Throttle stop".

I undervolted my cpu -.125mv and my cpu cache by -0.75mv.

Next I made a custom fan config in the alienware fx section.

I went to the fan section for my and made my own fan speed graph so it cools faster. If you need help on what to do look up throttle stop undervolting on yoytube. Its easy but a bit stressful doing it the first time.

I manage a business and I bought one Alienware M17 R1 (with 2070), seven M17 R2 (mix of 2060 and 2070) (Yes, a total of 8 M17s) for VR-related work. I've been a fan of Alienware as I had not purchased any of their products before and thought they are truly performance machines.

I faced this issue with ALL of them within just ONE YEAR of purchase! 3 of them are the ones I personally used and diagnosed every bit. My CPU temps hit 101 degrees and performance drops immediately. making graphic intense software and Games impossible to use. Even at the lowest setting in Apex legends, at literally 720P resolution, the laptop was unable to perform for an hour.

I couldn't resolve this issue even after completely restoring machine to factory settings, installing all necessary updates for drivers and BIOS and contacting dell support. The truth I realized is it is hardware issue and it's with M17 R1 and M17R2 devices I used within 6 months. They just made really bad products which are poorly tested and are unfit for gaming in general (I can't even play Valorant on these machines). They build faulty machines, sell them at an unrealistically higher prices and don't cover international warranty in their basic warranty plan. Meaning I have to pay EXTRA money for their poorly engineered product which fails within one year.

All of my peers who bought Asus ROG and Acer Predator are happily gaming in VR without breaking a sweat. And here I am who bragged about THE GREAT Alienware, spent a bomb on it, regretting every bit of it!

Its not Dell's fault that Intel CPUs are designed for installation in Desktops and not Laptops. Intel have acknowledged that they failed to listen to their client's feedback. Intel 11th and 12th Generation CPUs will start to offer laptop CPUs. Meanwhile, other providers of CPUs have already responded and their CPUs are designed to be installed in thin laptops.
