I have an update. I was finally able to take the time to do some proper troubleshooting and Dell is sending out someone to replace components. The delay in getting this done was on my side and as soon as I was able to provide proper info to Dell they made arrangements to fix my laptop. I bought the Premium Plus warranty and in my experience it always pays off.

Final update. The tech arrived and discovered that all of the screws that hold the thermal pad down were missing. This is a refurb and I guess this was missed when reassembling after the initial repairs. He replaced the fans and thermal pad and added the missing screws. I was then able to run a benchmark and now the laptop performs as expected and everything is nice and cool.

I recommend you try some basic stuff before contacting dell. I recommend keeping the laptop elevated from a flat surface and you use the right adapter to keep it charged while using it. I also recommend you have it in a nice room with a temperature of 68F which is preferable and maybe keep a window in case it gets too hot. I also recommend dropping the speed of the CPU and locking it to 3.8Ghz with no turbo boost. The GPU I recommend you turn off all overclocks and limit your games to use 120hz instead of 144 and higher so it puts less strain on the system and use less power.

solution from dell :
buy a full price computer, and if you want use for what it s made for (gaming), reduce the original specs

just crazy to listen that.

Have a g7 7700 from last november, made literraly hundred setup to find a way.
Sometimes it s work, sometime not

I tried with all bios versions, the last one (1.9.0) doesnt fix anythings

dell support i contacted the first week said, even with captures, if in none gaming utilisation, no issues, they cant do anything

still got the messages. it s funny

Hi @reefox thank you for sharing update. That does not agree with the Dell prepared script that first tier support are mandated to use. Within the first 30 days of Approval timescale you have option to Reject new system with fault. When Dell approves Reject, you have option to request new replacement system or full refund. Dell Refund policy, New vs Refurbished  The first year basic Dell warranty is the same, irrespective how the system is purchased from Dell.

Did you follow the instructions I posted above? What speeds are you doing on the laptop, are you overclocking or are you looking for a long battery life and better thermals?

You can't be serious. I didn't buy a premium gaming laptop just to have to slow it down to non-premium performance. Please re-read my post and if you have a response that addresses the 30 degree difference in the GPU Temp and the GPU Hot Spot Temp feel free to share it. This seems like defective hardware or improper contact in the cooling system.

I had initially purchased a G7 with a 2070 Super and it was terrible. It would throttle within just a few minutes into any game. I returned it and purchased an Alienware. I also have a M17 R3 with a 2080 Super and it runs perfectly.

I can verify this is true. I initially purchased a refurb G7 and it was garbage. Clearly not checked over by their own technicians. The SSD showed it was regularly overheating (over 100 C) and had over 300 minutes above critical temp threshold according to HWiNFO, and this was on my second day of ownership. The GPU regularly throttled itself to 18W. It would bluescreen several times a day using apps like Outlook and Word. The good news is that Dell happily gave me a full refund. It was simple and fast. Also, don't waste your money on a G7.

my g7 7700 has been delivred the 27th october 2020 from dell France, and i contacted, for report the issue, the french dell support from whatsapp  (< Private Phone number removed.TOS69>) the 17th november 2020 at 10.50pm exactly

let me tell you the exact reply from them, the 19th nov 2020 at 1.08pm

"je vous propose de contacter notre service à la clientele au 0801 800 088 pour négocier les possibilités qui s'offrent à vous si vous n'êtes pas satisfait du produit.

Aucune réparation technique n'est possible car aucun problème matériel n'est detecté"

translation : "no any issue have been found from the test, you can call the dell support to negociate any posibilities if you are not happy with the laptop"

we clearly know what it mean... it s why i didnt do anything after this.

I did everything, even limiting the cpu at 2000mhz with windows power options, the only way to play without throttling is to underclock the gpu and disable the turbo boost.

And of course, my computer is not overclocking. If in normal configuraiton, it cant working properly, i cant imagine trying to use it while oc

I m not losing time anymore with this piece of , and about the full refund, in france where i bought it, it wasnt working (it was 14days) and  when i contacted dell support from whatsapp, they said it was too late.

For them, no any technical issues because desktop utilisation and stress test from the dell support app was ok.

Even with captures of the problem i sent to them, it wasnt enough.

It will be my last personnal computer from dell.

And also next, i will buy it on amazon. No any questions and full refund for 1 month if any issues.

That's amazing for you and I'm hoping this doesn't happen again.

Wow that’s great @JoeSnuffie! I’m still wondering how lucky you are to have the heat sink still on the chip since it was unscrewed? But I really hope you’re happy with your laptop and now the only thing to do is use it like you want to know.
