x15 R1, Samsung 980 Pro SSD with heatsink?

Will a Samsung 980 Pro SSD with heatsink fit in the Alienware x15 R1 laptop?

At 86 mm in depth with the heatsink, no - it will not.

Hi @alienwalk34  thank you for sharing update.

Dell always recommend installing M.2 NVMe cards with Dell thermal shield. The M.2 NVMe drives get very hot when installed in Alienware laptop designed for performance. The earlier images show that the Alienware x15 R1 M.2 drives are installed in the internal dedicated protective hardware enclosure and the Dell thermal shield is required. Dell only supplies their thermal shield with original order, so a single M.2 NVMe drive does not get the second Dell thermal shield. Searching the internet for a bargain price is advocated.

Hi @alienwalk34 welcome to this free user to user Alienware laptop discussion forum. This is not Dell Support.

Support for Alienware x15 R1, Service Manual, Installing the M.2 2280 solid-state drive says use the Dell thermal shield. Which is Dell Part Number (DP/N) 05GDMJ. Example: M.2 2280 SSD NVME Heatsink Cover Thermal Plate For Dell ALIENWARE x15 R1 R2 | eBay

Users can install up to two M.2 drives. Only one slot can support up to PCIe4, while the other slot can support up to PCIe3. The PCIe4 slot is usually designated SSD-01.

Do I need that heatsink or would the SSD drive be good without it?
