x17 R1, bad DC input port?

Hi @cwmcd welcome to this free user-to-user Alienware laptop discussion forum. 

The Alienware x17 R1 laptop is still relatively new and perhaps the purchase invoice says laptop is still under Dell warranty. You have been very unlucky if the DC Power Input Jack with Cable DP/N 06CG68 has failed. They usually last the lifetime of the laptop. Removing the power-adapter port.

Dell warranty should assign a local contractor to visit and install the replacement OEM DC Power Input Jack, etc. 

1. Check in BIOS (accessed via F2 when booting) to see if the AC adapter is recognized.
2. You could try to clean the charging port. Use a Q-tip to brush out dust. Clean the contacts using 99% alcohol. If that doesn't make a difference, then:
3. If the second AC adapter you tried was not a Dell adapter, try with a second Dell adapter. Or, try your Dell adapter with another Dell laptop (if you're able).
4. If a known-good Dell adapter isn't recognized by your laptop, or if two Dell adapters aren't recognized by your laptop, then either the charging jack or the charging circuit on the motherboard is bad.
5. To replace the charging port/cable, follow the disassembly and reassembly steps in Dell's Service Manual.
   Look on YouTube for videos showing disassembly of your model. But, be cautious with them, as some use steps or methods that are not appropriate. Use the videos to add to your understanding of what to do, but follow the steps in Dell's manual.
6. If the new charging jack doesn't help, when connected to known-good Dell AC adapters, then the charging circuit on the motherboard is bad and you'd have to replace the motherboard.

Whenever touching components or working inside a computer, wear a grounded wrist strap, also called anti-static wrist strap, ESD wrist strap, or ground bracelet. I know many people do such work without this, but it's a cheap and sensible precaution. Rest the laptop on an anti-static mat or at least a reasonable alternative such as corrugated cardboard.
