x17 R1, intermittent flashing black/white horizontal bars on LCD

I have my Alienware for a month now, and this started happening maybe 2 weeks ago.

Sometimes, when I browse stuff in windows File Explorer, or do something in a web browser, weird flashing horizontal bars start appearing on the LCD (please see video recorded with my phone)

VIDEO: https://streamable.com/slcfre

(please forward to the second half of the video for sharper image)

Note:

1) I already installed video drivers from Dell's website

2) It does not matter if Advanced Optimus is turned on or off

3) It only happens on the internal LCD. When connected via HDMI to a 4K TV, the bars flash on the laptop's LCD, but not on the TV

4) This problem is present on both 165 and 60hz display modes

5) Oddly, I have not noticed it while playing games

6) This is not a permament issue, it happens, then goes away for a while, and happens again.

Any ideas?

Update = After completing troubleshooting, a DELL-Cares agent setup a part replacement.

The technician just installed a new LCD panel in my unit. I will have to do some more testing, but I'm not able to reproduce the problem anymore on-the-spot, so I guess it was a faulty LCD after all.

Did you specifically update the Intel iGPU drivers? There have been some issues with those causing a lot of problems on the new X series, although they are usually much more sever then what your seeing there.  To me that looks more like a hardware defect in the screen, possibly the LCD cable even.

I would try the Intel drivers first, get them from Intel, not from Dell, see if that helps at all.

Thanks for response. I checked it in the Device Manager and indeed, the driver version of the Intel integrated GPU is outdated. I'm downloading and installing it now. I'll post results later.

So, the update did nothing. My only question is, even if it is a hardware issue with the LCD or the LCD connector, wouldnt it be permament? Again, today I booted up the laptop, and everything is fine... Until I launched Heroes 3. Oddly enough, when I ALT+TAB out of the game, it stops. It kinda smells like a driver issue to me, but everything is up to date.

Okay, so I have some further updates on this topic (also, sorry to Dell's Support, I could not answer your private messages, I was moving to a different appartament, sorry).

These are the current system stats of the laptop for reference:

WINDOWS 10 21H2, Build 19044.1706

Nvidia Driver: 512.96 (Studio driver)

Intel iGPU driver: 30.0.101.1960 (date: 29 April 2022) - the newest available on Intel's website

So, I tried recording the problem with Bandicam, to make sure it's not an internal (dGPU or iGPU) problem. The bandicam recording came out clean without any flashing bars, so it has to be something in the laptop's LCD itself.

Also, I noticed a few strange things. I already mentioned, the flashing bars appear only in web browsers while watching videos, in Windows File Explorer (explorer.exe), and in specific older games, running on DirectX8 or older. However, in File Explorer, the problem is especially puzzling:

When I switch to folder view mode "details", the flashing bars appear. When I switch to anything else (like big icons, etc), they disappear (please see video below, recorded with my phone to catch the LCD artifacts

https://streamable.com/rkk2dl

With Heroes of Might and Magic 3, the problem is also similar. The bars are flashing on the main map when I move the hero, but not inside of the Castle:

Updating Nvidia, Intel, and AWCC did not yield any improvements. If it is a LCD issue, I'm interested why it only happens in specific situations?

Another sample: This happened in Affinity Photo on the tonemapping tab. Once I closed the tab and returned to normal image edition, the bars disappeared:

Thanks so much for response, I re-installed the drivers you proposed, rebooted, but still no luck

To other people perhaps having the same problem: Dell support told me to run a GPU stress test via the SupportAssist app. The test came okay. I also performed the LCD Built-In Self Test (hold the "D" key during boot-up), which also didn't display any artifacts.

I'm beginning to wonder - can this be a conflict between Intel's iGPU drivers and something Windows-specific?

So, another update on the topic. Dell Support suggested I should uninstall the iGPU completely from Device Manager (right click-> uninstall device, check the "remove drivers" checkbox). Upon Windows reboot, Windows Update pulled an older driver version for the iGPU, 27.20.100.9664. It didn't solve the problem.

Hi again. I have to dig out my old thread as the problem still hasn't been removed.

If you're just reading this now and don't want to go through the entire thread, here's a summary of my problem:

The LCD on my X17 R1 (RTX3080) has random black or white bars flashing intermittently while operating web browsers, photo editing apps (like Affinity Photo/Photoshop) and playing old games with native resolution below 1080p (like Heroes of Might and Magic 3). Also, there are a few weird exceptions:

  • The issue is not present while playing modern games utilizing DX11/DX12.
  • The issue is also not present on external 4K TV or 1440p Asus monitor (altogether, even Heroes 3 run fine).
  • When playing on the external display, artifacts show on the LCD, but not on the external display.

This is how the problem looks like:

Let's summarize what I have done to troubleshoot the issue of intermittent flashing black/white horizontal bars on LCD. Most of the actions were recommended by @DELL-Cares and/or the support via private messages:

- Run the bult-in LCD test by holding the "D" key during boot-up. Result OK.

- Run the support assist app - no problems detected

- Install ALL recommended drivers from the Dell download page - check

- Latest BIOS version (1.11.0) - check

- Turning on/off Nvidia OPTIMUS - no difference

- Uninstall Intel iGPU drivers using DDU. Rebooting, letting Windows pull it's own driver - check, problem still here

- Uninstall Intel iGPU using DDU, install a fresh copy of the driver from Intel's download page - check, problem still here

- Uninstall Intel iGPU using DDU, install a fresh copy of the driver from Dell's download page - check, problem still here

- Reinstall NVIDIA drivers using the "clean install" option - check, problem still there.

- Tinkering with Nvidia Control Panel - I tried to change refresh rates 60hz/165hz, scaling modes (no scaling, stretch, proportional, etc), manually set hardware acceleration for the problematic apps/games to on/off. No solution, except for the Heroes 3 game - when I set the mode to "No Stretch", the game plays without the flashing artifacts, but is locked to 640x480px resolution with black borders around it, so it's kind of unplayable.

On another note, here is a list of apps that display the artifacts:

  • Affinity photo / photoshop
  • All web browsers
  • Blender
  • Old games (Heroes of Might and Magic 3)

Here is a list of games with no problems at all, running on 1080p on laptop's display flawelessly without any artifacts:

  • Mafia: Definitive Edition
  • Cyberpunk 2077
  • Subnautica: Below Zero
  • Prey
  • Shadow of Tomb Raider
  • and many others...

Did I exert all the options and have to issue a replacement of the LCD/Connector or is there anything else I missed?
