Server with almost 20 TB of data - best practices to complete backup

Hi all, we have a server with almost 20 TB of data. Some times the job is completed but very often it goes in time out start, or cancelled. When the backup is complete sometimes it lasts for 60 hrs. This is the job do you have suggestions to improve performance?
