performance of 5 disk raid 5 vs 4 disk raid 1/0

Can anyone comment on the performance of a 4 disk raid 1/0 raid group vs a 5 disk (4+1) raid 5 raid group? This will be for an app that is almost exclusively small random writes.

Thanks,

John

If the app will be performing mostly writes, then the 1/0 solution would be better. RAID 5 tends to be better for read intensive applications. Writes to a RAID 5 suffer a performance penalty in calculating the parity.

See also the "EMC CLARiiON Best Practices for Fibre Channel Storage" whitepaper on Powerlink (search by title).
The "Sizing the storage requirement" section should be additionally helpful.
