Have you enabled Celerra's automatic log collection and transfer yet?

Hi, everyone.

Did you know that Celerra now has an automatic log collection and transfer feature?

The feature is not turned on by default, but EMC recommends that you turn it on to enable quicker resolution in the event of a problem. Turn on this functionality as follows:

In Celerra Manager, navigate to the Support > Log Collection tab. Select Enable Automatic Transfer and apply your changes.

On the Celerra CLI, run:

$/nas/tools/automaticcollection -enable

In addition to having the most severe problems automatically reported to EMC, you can use this functionality to collect logs for self reported problems using the Collect button on the Support screen in Celerra Manager or by directly invoking the CLI script as detailed in the release notes below.

This functionality was introduced with Celerra code version 5.5.24.2. Here is an excerpt from the 5.5.24.2 release notes...

Automatic collection and transfer with Celerra Manager

When you discover a problem with Celerra® Manager or your Celerra Network Server, before calling your service provider or EMC for help, collect support information to help correct the problem by running the automatic collection script on the Control Station. EMC recommends that you run this script as soon as possible after you discover a problem. The sooner you run this script, the more likely you are to capture information that can help correct the problem.

To run the script to collect support information into a file:

  • In Celerra Manager, select Tools > SSH Shell and log in to the Control Station as root. This opens a separate window containing a secure shell in which you can run the script on the Control Station.

  • In the secure shell window, enter this complete path to run the script:

    /nas/tools/automaticcollection -getlogs

The script compiles Celerra Network Server support information into a compressed tar file and saves the file in the /nas/var/log directory. The tar file is given this name:

    support_materials_ . .tar.gz

Where is the serial number of the Celerra and is the time the script was run.

After you create the support materials file, contact your service provider or the EMC Support Center for directions on how to deliver the file for analysis. The Problem Resolution Roadmap for Celerra technical module describes how you can set up the automatic transfer of the support materials file to EMC.
