Shutdown and move Cisco 9506 switches

Hello,

In our Texas data center we have two identical 9506 switches (mds1 and mds2). Each host and Storage array is connected to both switches. We need to move both switches to a new location. We will pull multiple new FC cables for each host and array to the new location.

We will then power down mds1 and move it to the new location. Once powered back up we will plug in the newly run cable into mds1. We will then go to each host and remove one old cable (each host has 2 HBAs) and plug in the newly run cable that we just plugged inot mds1. We will do a similar thing for each array.

As long as we plug the right cables into the right ports we should be good with no zonning changes required. Once mds1 comes up in the new location we should be good. During the move of mds1 all hosts and storage will keep running through the redundant ports on mds2.

At some point later we would shutdown mds2 and move it while everything runs on mds1.

We've never done anything like this and the mds switches are fairly new to us. Of course we would back up the switches before shutdown. Looking at the MDS9000 Quick Reference I can see that their is cli command shutdown. It says that it gracefully shuts down the interface and administratively disables traffic flow.

I'm guessing that when we power up the switch at the new location it will just come up with all zonning infor in place.

Are there any issues that we should be aware of before attempting this move?

i thought there was a way to ISL two separate switches where both switches are managed by FM from one view (without FM license), yet fabrics do not merge.

September 24th, 2008 07:00

Back in 2.x and early 3.x you weren't required to have a license installed to see multiple fabrics at the same time. You were technically suppose to have the licenses to be not in violation but Cisco didn't enforce it. Cisco decided to close that backdoor around the license. Cisco is closing down even more licensing back doors in 4.1(1) so if you like the features of FMS, you'll need to ensure you are correctly licensed going forward. In 4.1(1) you can't collect PM data on switches that don't have FMS licenses. Each and every switch will need to have the license or you won't be able to pull stats or run reports.

Thank you.

FYI, In Windows, there is a small free cmdline tool called FCInfo:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=73d7b879-55b2-4629-8734-b0698096d3b1&displaylang=en

Output looks like this:

There are 2 adapters:
com.qlogic-QLA2340-0: PortWWN: 21:00:00:e0:8b:01:b5:8f \\.\Scsi2:
com.qlogic-QLA2340-1: PortWWN: 21:00:00:e0:8b:01:c0:93 \\.\Scsi3:

Cool, I hadn't seen that before.

If you have Solutions Enabler installed you can also list the HBAs on the host:

C:\>symmask list hba

Identifier Type Adapter Physical Device Path Dir:P
---------------- ----- ---------------- ------------------------ -----
210000e08b90490f Fibre 210000e08b90490f \\.\PHYSICALDRIVE1 08D:1
210000e08b907b86 Fibre 210000e08b907b86 \\.\PHYSICALDRIVE6 09D:1

If the command doesn't list all the HBAs on your host run the discover process first:

C:\>symmask discover hba

Symmetrix ID : xxxxxxxxxxxx
Device Masking Status : Success

Identifier Type User-generated Name
---------------- ----- ---------------------------------
210000e08b90490f Fibre
210000e08b907b86 Fibre

solution enabler requires to be installed, if you want something quick and dirty ..take a look at inq. You can get it from here:

ftp://ftp.emc.com/pub/symm3000/inquiry/v6.5.2.0/

one of the options is "inq -hba" which will give you this output:

C:\Temp>inq.wnt_exe -hba
Inquiry utility, Version V7.3-623 (Rev 0.0) (SIL Version V6.0.0.0 (Edit Lev
el 623)

For help type inq -h.

Is Solutions Enabler a free tool?

October 23rd, 2008 10:00

Loading dll's would not be fun (esp on my big IA box). If it was a straight exe, that would be cool. I use FCInfo all the time. I just load it to my home drive and if I connect to a server, I just run it to get wwn info.

It's good to know there are other tools out there. If it does not require an install + free, all the better...!

The software can be download from powerlink but the licenses for certain functions are not free. I installed SE on a host and did not add in any license files and I was able to run the following command.

C:\>syminq hba

Host Name : xxxxxxxxx

HBA Type : FibreChannel
HBA Name : com.qlogic-QLA2340-0
Vendor : QLogic Corporation
Model : QLA2340

So that will give you some basic information for free. The inq tool that dynamox referenced might be more useful if you don't need anything from SE expect to get HBA info.

i like how syminq shows driver/firmware version. Aran ..can you copy syminq.exe to another box that does not have SE installed. I am just curious if it will work as stand alone utility or it will require all those dll's. Unfortunately i don't have a test box right now.

Thanks

Nope you need the dll's. So yeah, fcinfo is simpler to use if you can't install software on the box.

you dont' really shut them down, create a backup of running config, make sure nothing is logged-in to the switch and flip the switched on the back of the unit. Same way to bring it back up.
