Tech Support Formatted My Backup Drive in Error

Dell Tech support couldn't get Dell Migrate to work, instead they Formatted my backup drive that had 20 years of data stored on it, offered to "take a look" even though they have no software to use to restore it and refused to cover the cost of taking it to a repair shop to get it done properly.
Everything I saved so carefully, wiped out, and the only response is "Sorry but we can't do anything."

A repair shop can hopefully reinstall the "pointers" and get my data back, is it too much to ask that the company that made the error take responsibility and make it right?

No computer manufacturer warrants against data loss (no computer repair shop will, either).

That is true.  I may never get the data back.  I will still try.  My viewpoint on this is that the tech should have asked permission to format anything, that didn't happen or I could have said No.  The cost to have a professional try and recover the data should be covered by the company that made the error.
