100% CPU usage while running video editor program
The machine: Dimension 4550, Pentium 4 at 2.40 GHz, 1 Gb DDR SDRAM at 333 MHz tied, 64 MB DDR NVIDIA GeForce4 TI4200 Graphics Card with TV out. I upgraded the hard drive and DVD deck two years ago.
The issue (or not): The Norton CPU usage histogram shows 100% CPU usage while using ArcSoft Media Impression for Kodak. I use this program to edit my Kodak Zi8 video camera .mov files. This 100% usage also occurs when I use many programs, but running the video editor or a video file converter requires running 100% CPU for extended periods of time. I realize that the 4550 is an older machine, but it runs the video editor and file converter with fine results, it just takes time. After installing Norton Internet Security 2011 late last week, I got a message from this program saying I was running high CPU usage while running Media Impression.
The question: Is it OK to run the 4550 at 100% CPU for extended periods of time or is it going to blow up? I open the case and carefully vacuum the chassis, fan and heat sinks every year. I can make the Norton Internet Security 2011 high CPU usage notice go away on a selective basis if I wish.

Hi Yzer,
I've got the same machine with very similar specs and also use it for video work (VHS to DVD). However, I use Cyberlink for video capture and Nero for editing and encoding. I've never seen either of those running at 100%. My suggestion would be to use Process Explorer to see if your video program is the only culprit.

it shouldn't blow up ...
but that hardware was not designed for video editing ... the CPU is having to do all the work because of no GPU help or any RAM ... Norton Security will also slow a system that old way down too.
but if it works for you .... :)

Freakmarket,
It's working, but slowly and at 100% CPU and with 75% of the 1GB RAM. The video card has 64MB RAM.
Task manager and Process Explorer both indicate that Norton Internet Security 2011 and other Norton apps are using very little of the processor: down in that 2-4% background level. Internet Security stays idle in the background when the CPU is tasked with other programs.
I looked at the processor upgrade suggestions at the top of this forum. Any suggestions regarding upgrades for this 4550 and graphics card that would provide GPU accelerated video decoding?
The Kodak Zi8 can shoot HD, 1080p. I've been editing 720p files from the Zi8 and haven't even considered editing 1080p with this machine.

Thanks for the suggestions. I ran Process Explorer which seems to be an expanded version of Windows Task Manager on XP Home. At idle the system is running 2-4% of CPU. There aren't any significantly offending programs. The video coding justs uses up the CPU.

i has to look up the specs on your system ... luckily the specs weren't on microfilm
your system has the old AGP slot that runs at the 2x/4x speeds ... i couldn't find a graphic card that has any video encoding built in that could run in it.
you may have reached the end of the upgrade road.
with the old P4 CPU and slow RAM a new card might not matter.

I'm thinking the same thing now. It's not like I haven't gotten my money's worth out of the Dimension 4550, so I'm looking at the new XPS machines. Thanks to everyone for the help!
