Thank you for reading and replying to my problem with the 1394 net adapter.
My computer is a Dell Dimension 8200, Windows XP, 513 megs ram, 80 gig hard disk.
I have been to Dell tech support, but no help from that area. When I look at my ipconfig in command, it gives me a blank. No adapters or anything is listed there. I am alarmed at this development and wonder what caused it and how I can solve it.
Again, the 1394 adapter is your firewire port and is not normally used as a network adapter. The problem is that your ethernet adapter is not installed. Have you tried installing the drivers for the ethernet network adapter? Are you sure that you have the GVC Ethernet adapter and not one of the other ones listed on the Dell download site?
I know that the 1394 is not related to the network connection and I apologize for the confusion. I really meant the Intel PRO/1000 MT Desktop Adapter is the one causing me grief. It also has a yellow exclamation point and is listed with the 1394 as unknown device. In fact, I cannot find any listing in device manager for Network Adapters.
I uninstalled the software that came with the card and then re-installed it. The same error message (Code 31) :Windows is unable to load the drvers for this device. So I went to the Intel site and downloaded a driver for the PRO/1000, but it still gives the same yellow point in the device manager under unknown devices. Still no Network Adapter listed.
I did just what you suggested and cleared the NVRAM. Thank you for the suggestion.
I uninstalled the Desktop adapter from Device Manager, and when the system rebooted it stated that it had found new hardware and installed it. But it then said the hardware may not function properly unless I reboot. I did that, but once more I have that darned yellow mark next to the adapter in device manager under unknown devices. In addition, when I look at ipconfig there is noting there.
This is extremely frustrating, especially after spending three days on this. I have emailed Intel about the problem but so far there as been no response from them, not even an acknowledgement that they recieved my email.
Perhaps the network card is bad. A cheap troubleshooting step would be to purchase a new PCI 10/100 ethernet network card (they can be found for less than $10) and see if that solves the problem.
I called Intel and spoke to a very nice techie. He agrees with you that the card is at fault and they are sending me out a brand new one. Mine was new anyway.
I called WalMart and they have one for $14.97, but I think I will wait for the Intel adapter.
I will let you know when/if I am back online again.
This may interest you. I found an answer to the problem in the Lavasoft Forum. The problem is all due to a glitch in AdAware. One member had exactly the same problem as I did. He restored all the quarantined files that Ad-Aware had quarantined, and after rebooting, with one or two tweaks, he restored his network adapter.
I did exactly that. I put an old Network adapter from Netgear in the PCI slot (my Intel was on its way for a replacement). After restoring the Ad-Aware files, I found the Newtork Adapter listed in device manager, where it hadn't been before, and no listing under unknown devices. It still had a yellow point. I installed the software for the old adapter, and Voila! I am back on the Internet, where I am typing this on my desktop. No more yellow points, and one happy camper.
Again, thanks for all your help. You may remember this if anyone else has the same problem with Ad-Aware.
Thanks for letting us know how you fixed the problem. Could you post a link to the lavasoft forum where you found the solution. It would be useful in case other people have this same problem.
Hello Brian, I have the same problem. I have been on it for over a week now, things a different on my end. Less support nor technician could fix it, they were all suggesting my computer being formatted which I can't. My computer wireless can't locate my internet connection. I have done everything I could and figured the fault came from 1394 Net Adapter with a darned yellow sign on it. Could you please explain how you did yours, i am not really good with computer, so please spare me those comp. terms and use simpler language lol. Could you please send me the link to get it done or anything I would need to download. Would be waiting. Thank you

Which model computer do you have? Which version of Windows? Note that the 1394 adapter is your Firewire adapter.

Steve,
You are one terrific guy. Thanks again for your quick useful replies and for your continued interest.
I will do as you suggest, although living oin the desert here there is no place to buy the card except maybe WalMart. I will try there.
May I report success or failure to you after all that?
