8200 RAM and System Bus Speed
I was informed that my PC requires PC800 RAM for upgrade - however..
The BIOS tell me about the memory:
Channel Speed 400Mhz
System Bus 400Mhz
So what does this mean - do I need to buy PC800 RDRAM?
When I upgrade do I buy the 800Mhz system bus pentium 4 processor?
Any help would be appreciated.

Thankyou for your reply - however it appears to be a little out of date.
Using the check my system option on the Dell website I'm told "Maximum Clock Speed 3060 MHz".
I also want to update the processor - can anyone tell me if the motherboard supports a FSB of 800Mhz - or am I limited to 533MHz?
I see that the Pentium 4 3.066MHz comes in two formats - 533 & 800FSB - which one does my Dimension 8200 support?
A defenitive answer would be great!
Thanks ;)

It all depends on when you bought your Dimension 8200.
When the 8200's first came out, they came with the 850 chip set that only supports buss speeds up to 400Mhz.
About a year ago when Intel released the 2.53Ghz CPU with the 533Mhz FSB, the motherboard was changed and it now uses the 850E chip set that supports buss speeds of up to 533Mhz.
Unfortunatly the only way to positivly know if you have the 850E chip set is to remove the heat sink from the MTH Chip (not the CPU) and look at the number printed on it.
The 8200's do not support the new 800Mhz FSb. Only the new 8300's and the new XPS's support the 800Mhz FSB.
The 3.06 Mhz CPU is a 533Mhz FSB
The new 3.0c CPU is a 800Mhz FSB.

EvilCensor...
You can find your chipset with the utility on my "Chipsets/CPU" page of my website. There is also other info to tell which chipset you have. After you find your chipset, scroll down and see your cpu options. I also offer CPU Upgrade Instructions on my site. Most of your questions if not all will be answered on my site.

Thanks everyone for the help - I fear I have the 850 as I bought my Dell back in November 2001
Could I trouble you guys again - and ask if Dell sell motherboard upgrades.. I thought they might have - however I've had no luck finding any mention.

To upgrade motherboards...this is what your looking at. The 850E chipset supports processors up to and including 533MHz. You can upgrade to a 850E chipset from the 850 on a 8200. Use a Intel Dell branded board from Dell for a perfect fit. Part # 1T751. Dell sells hardware from their spareparts. You must call, they do not sell motherboards on line. They have to keep these parts for warranty replacements anyway. It is not a new board. This is a refurbished part which does not mean it has to be a rebuilt part, but parts from systems which have been sent back. Since the board is Dell branded, it is covered under warranty for 90 days or the length of your extended warranty...which ever is greater. Dell should give you tech support with this. Also I have been told by Dell tech support, level 2, that if you change motherboard and processor, ( both ) it voids your system warranty. You may want to check with Dell's warranty dept. before proceeding. I would buy the processor some where else because of the price.
If you have a 850 chipset, you probably have PC800 45NS RDRAM. It should say either 800-45 or 800-40 on your memory module. The new 850E motherboard comes with Bios A09 flashed, and you will need to buy PC800-40Ns RDRAM for it. The only other option is to flash the new board back to Bios A04. You can run PC800 45NS at Bios A04, they didn't require 40NS untill A05 and higher, but if you ever flash your Bios higher, it won't boot up.
You can then use any Pentium 4 533MHz 478 pin processors. If you use a processor with hyperthreading, it will be disabled because there is no Bios for it on the 8200.
I don't know which processor you have, but considering the price of a new motherboard, all memory and a high priced 533Mhz processor...you are probably better off going with a 2.6Ghz 400Mhz processor for the board you have.

Given the date you purchased, you not only have an 850 chipset, but you have 45ns memory as well. 40ns memory came on the scene around the time of the 533mhz boards. So if you upgrade the cpu, you had better stay with a 400mhz or your in for a lot of parts.
