Add second Harddisk in Dell Optiplex 780 SFF
Hi,
I have dell Optiplex 780 SFF (Small Form Factor) PC. It have 3 SATA options. I want to add 2nd hard drive in it but I can't see any power cable for 2nd Hard drive.
At present I have One SATA Hard Drive and One SATA Super Combo. But the power cable of SATA Super combo is very unique I can't able to give power from that cable to my 2nd Hard Drive.
Is there any possibility to add 2nd Hard drive in PC case ???

Hi Dani,
The SFF uses a slim optical drive which does not take a standard SATA power connection. You'll need to purchase an adapter or SATA power cable splitter to provide power to a second hard drive.

I have purchase "SATA power cable splitter" and attached 2 Harddisks very simple.

I just put the 2nd Harddrive under Dvd Writer. There is enough place under DVD Writer for Harddrive.
Attached is the image in which I highlight the 2nd Harddrive in red circle.

Hi,
Please may I ask a few of questions regarding this thread:
1. Can the Dell 780 SFF PSU handle the additional HDD without stress?
2. Is the SATA HDD a 3.5" standard size?
3. Can the additional drive be "Located" by screws, or does it just lay in the position as shown in the pic?
I hope someone can advise a newbie such as me. :emotion-10:

2. yes, but i used 2.5 to 3.5 adapter and it fits perfectly
3. i think to u could screws but its such a snug fit that u can do without

Regarding the possible PSU overhead issue: The DT and Mini Tower, have a more powerful PSU than the SFF. So I'm thinking if you are using an additional Half Height/Low Profile Video Card and want to add a 3.5" HDD as well - I wouldn't risk it.
I have checked the space formally allocated to a floppy drive and yes, there is just enough space for a 3.5" HDD. But I still have reservations. Conventional wisdom has always stated that a 3.5" HDD requires at least, some air space surrounding it, to dissapate heat.
So: 2.5" HDD seems to be the way to go (like narithlot). They use less power and in an open carrier frame, will have space for air to circulate. It is a pity, because I've got plenty of spare 3.5" drives! Anybody got a cheap Hitachi 2.5" they don't want?

I have installed a Crucial SSD in a 3 1/2 inch mount. I'm thinking about maybe putting the SSD under the DVD burner and putting the 3 1/2 inch HDD where it belongs for storage "stuff". I'm just wondering about the 235w power supply. I do have a low profile video card installed
