Add second Harddisk in Dell Optiplex 780 SFF

Hi,

I have dell Optiplex 780 SFF (Small Form Factor) PC. It have 3 SATA options. I want to add 2nd hard drive in it but I can't see any power cable for 2nd Hard drive.

At present I have  One SATA Hard Drive and One SATA Super Combo. But the power cable of SATA Super combo is very unique I can't able to give power from that cable to my 2nd Hard Drive.

Is there any possibility to add 2nd Hard drive in PC case ???

Best Regards,

Dani

it should not be a problem. i have a 1gb drr3 with just a heatsink and everything stills runs fine, ive also upgraded the cpu to a core 2 quad q6600 overclocked  to 2.99 still run great but i had some heating issue, so i just flipped the fan around and added a pci fan exhaust, now everything is running beautifully. what kind of video card are u running?

I ordered a sata "Y" splitter from Amazon for $8.00. Connect it to the sata power in the case and use the two from the splitter.

i am using the stock power supply that came with the system, but i was thinking about upgrading to 1gb gddr5, still unsure of how the system will handle it

Mine came with a NVIDIA GeForce 9300 GE which is fine for me. Not a gamer. What power supply are you using with your setup?

I wanted to know if you've had any problems with the extra HDD? Also, did you use a 2.5 or 3.5 HDD? Just wanted to make sure before get an extra drive.

I was using a 500 gb 3 1/2 in. sata HDD which I left where it belongs. I put a 2 1/2 SSD drive (secured with industrial strength Velcro) attached under my DVD drive. I used a SATA splitter that cost around $7 so I would have enough SATA connectors. Both drives are running around 35 degrees C and I have had absolutely no issues at all. I was worried about the SFF power supply being enough but like I said, no issues.

When I used the Velcro, I pushed the two strips together first so I could make sure of a good hold without putting a lot of pressure on the SSD. Then I pulled the strips off exposing the sticky sides and stuck them together. I let it sit out with only the pressure of the DVD drive for about 30 minutes then installed it back in the case. It was very easy to do.

Hi, I'm adding a WD Red 3 TB drive (3.5") to the bay under my current C drive (lower front), but I'm not sure I have the data connection correct... is it the other SATA connection close to where the motherboard power connection is? I ask because the system doesn't recognize any new devices and I've got it all wired up.

If you could let me know, I'd appreciate it.  -- Tim

Your drive may simply need to be partitioned and set up. These instructions are for Windows 7, but should work with slight alterations in other versions.

Click Start, right-click Computer, and select Manage. This will bring up the Computer Management program. Once there, click Disk Management in the left pane, under Storage.

This will display all of your internal drives. The new one should have a black rather than a blue bar on the top. And it should be described as Unallocated. Right-click that drive, select New Simple Volume, and follow the wizard.

ok, I got there (and thanks by the way for that info!!) but no other drive showed up... I'm quite frustrated as a Christmas deadline is approaching and I need to have this computer all put together in a few days.

I got it wired for power and data, and all of my other items in the machine are powered.  Could it be something with the drive?  did I forget to remove something?  If what that guy said about 1 TB was correct, don't you think I could still allocate 1 TB?   annoyed, Tim

Do you see the drive in the bios?

actually, I was going into the bios when you sent that message -- it took me awhile to find it, but it was successful!!  Thanks a bunch, I really appreciate it.  Incidentally, it doesn't matter how large the HDD is, just that it's allocated properly.  -  Tim

I want to add a SSD with OS to my Optiplex 780 SSF and to use the old HD as backup storage. I managed the sata Y-power splitter issue and placed the drive under the the DVD drive.

But now I am not sure about the SATA connection. There are 3 SATA connectors on the mainboard and 1 eSATA on the rear side. By default the HD is connected to SATA-0 and the DVD drive is connected to SATA-1.

The question is, are SATA-0, SATA-1 and SATA-2 equal? SATA-2 is placed at an other position then SATA-0 and SATA-1.

Or is it better to connect SSD (with OS) to SATA-0, the HD to SATA-1 and the DVD drive to SATA-2?

Regards

Peter

You may have read my post about attaching the SSD under the DVD with Velcro. I used the SATA 0 connection that the original HDD was using, then I attached the original drive that I'm using for storage to the 3rd SATA connection on the board. It works very well that way. I hope this helps.
