Alert! Previous fan failure.

I bought a new 8250 and it arrived a few days before Christmas.  I installed an ISDN card and it ran fine for weeks.  However, the last few days it appears to have started shutting down by itself.  When I reboot I get Alert! Previous fan failure.  Then it will run fine for as long as I'm using it, so I am unsure how long it takes before it decides to shut itself down again.

Please advise.

Is it possible your computer started to over heat and just shut it self down to prevent damage?

Just a guess!

I bet you're right.  And I also bet the reason it started to overheat is because a fan is flaky.

You need to replace your fan. The fan probably is not running and you should not use your computer until its replaced. Call Dell for a replacement

Dell MOBO's cannot detect the temperature of any components.

I called them Saturday morning.  The new fan should be here today sometime.

I have a 8250 3.06 ghz when i run normal applications the fan spins at a low rpm but if i play
a game or run a cpu intensive app the fan speeds up. Dell must have a temp monitor on the
new 8250 MOBO's.

This is nuts I just came to this forum to post a similar problem, my brand new 4550 @ 3.06ghz got the same problem about 1hr ago. The computer is 1 week old! I called Dell support, they'll be sending a tech to replace the fan, ETA about 1 week... I could have just asked for a replacement fan but I didn't want to do anything that could void my warranty. (eventhough it's an option they give us I'm taking no chances) Like I said the computer is brand new, and it seems I'm not the only one having the same problem. Was playing Diablo2 and the computer shut down, rebooted and I got the previous fan failure message. Dell had me turn the computer on and off about 50 times (or so it seemed) and tell them the color code (lights) in the back of the computer. (for those who haven't gotten a hold of Dell support yet) Basically I'm SOL for about a week on a brand new system, makes me wonder what I got myself into, 1st time Dell buyer.

I'm wondering if the fan they used can't handle the load at the high speed.  I'm wonder how long this new fan will last.

No one was home yesterday when the delivery guys came by, and they wouldn't leave it without a signature.  My wife has her marching orders today so it should be waiting for me when I get home.  I'll post here and let everyone know if the new fan fixes the shutdown problem.

The tech guy just dropped by, 2 secs later the new CPU fan was installed, the computer is running fine now. Like Sbryant says, I wonder how long the new fan will last, or if it was just a defective one.

I can tell you that the part number for the replacement fan for an 8250 is different than what it originally came with.  I learned that much on the phone with support.  So maybe they beefed the fan up.  But they sent me the wrong part (a metal chip cover for a motherboard), so I'm still waiting for the replacement fan,  I was going to put it in myself, but messing up the replacement order (after I gave her the part number twice) kinda irked me.  I told them to send a repairman around this time.  He's due today.

Thanks and I guess I should just wait for the fan and not try to use it.It just keeps shutting down anyway Thanks Guy

The alert went away by itself.  Everything seems to be fine.  However, the new fan makes a bit more noise than the old one does.  I just hope that's not a sign that it will have a short life span too.

I just got the same issue today on my 8250 with 3.06 ht processor. They are sending me a new fan should be here wed. I will do the install. The thing that makes me upset is tech support are not reading in these forums because my tech guy had no clue this is a issue and it took a hour for him to finally say he will send a new fan out and issues like this are not being into there 911 sytem of reports . This is BS in my book. I paid a lot of money for this thing and it is only a month old. And I make a living from my computers. OKAY i vented sorry to all . Wanted to know after the fan was installed did the alert go away or did he go into the BIOs and reset them.

I had the same problem with my new 8250, they sent the wrong part. LAter the fan, which I replaced and it started working okay until today when the fan failure warning appeared again. By chance, I got a call from Dell who stated that the 200gig HD is causing problems of another kind, and led me through a BIOS change. She thought this may be solve the fan problem but may not.
