Alienware Aurora - System Freezing

Dear All - my desktop freezes quite frequently either at the time of system boot or after the system has successfully booted and I have logged into the system (nothing works and Ctrl+Alt+Delete does not do anything) . In both cases I then have to force reboot the system and end up losing my work - extremely annoying.

In some case the system restarts automatically while I am working.

I have run Dell diagnostic available on the support page and it does not throw any errors. I have also run the assessment from BIOS by pressing the F12 key while rebooting. Most of the time that diagnostic also does not throw any error. However on couple of occasions the screen also froze while running the tests.

appreciate any help I can get

Thanks

There were four Aurora revisions. Which one is yours? Does it ever freeze in safemode? Have powered off, disconnected the power cord, opened the case, removed and reseated all cards, cabling, ram, etc. blew out all the dust?

Chris Thanks for the reply. I am not sure about the specific Aurora revision but it was shipped in 2009. I have included the configuration below if it helps. I have not yet done any of the steps you have suggested. Can you possibly direct me to an article or a video which explains how to go about reseating cards, cabling and ram.

I have also not attempted to run the system in a safe mode. But freezing problem or failure to boot is quite random. Many thanks for your help

The 2009 Aurora-R1 Owner's Manual shows how to do the work.

Thank you - but before I do that let me also point out that I upgraded to Windows 10 couple of months ago and I see on Dell's support site the following message

Product not tested for Windows 10 upgrade

Dell is not testing or developing Windows 10 drivers for this product (my system). If you choose to upgrade, some features, applications, and connected devices may not work as expected.

Also in the Device Manager dialogue box I see a driver error for Serial ATA Controller, which I believe relates to Hard Drive? When I try and upgrade the driver the windows cannot find it.

Could this also be causing the issues I describe above? If yes then what is the solution? how do I find the right driver as Dell is providing this for windows 10? or should I reinstall Windows 7?

Many thanks

You can try the Intel update program to see if it will install the missing driver.
