Anyone know how to fix this error code?

Sorry if this has been asked before.
I cannot play music or listen to sounds on a video. A friend of mine told me to run a sound and music test on DXDiag and I got the following:

DirectSound test results: Failure at step 3 (DirectSoundCreate): HRESULT = 0x88780078 (No driver)

DirectMusic test results: Failure at step 6 (Activating the IDirectMusicPort): HRESULT = 0x88780078 (No driver)

First of all, I don't know how to fix this and I don't know where to get the drivers from. Don't know if this is relevant but computer is a Dimension 4600C, P4 (2.66GHz). I want to avoid reformatting the HD if possible, but if it goes down to that then thats fine too.

What type of sound card do you have?  If I remember correctly, direct x tries to either replace the existing driver with one that has direct x code or puts a wrapper around the existing driver.  It could be that it doesn't support the card.  Does the sound card work otherwise?

My dimension is one of those "slim/skinny" types which has the sound integrated into the motherboard. My computer was working fine up until one month ago. Ever since then, I would get the error code 0x88780078 everytime I try to play music. The only sounds that will work are system sounds. If I open Sounds and Audio Devices Properties, the volume tab will show No Audio Device (and hence, no volume control).
